It may be unkind to say this, but I figure once their unemployment stipends began to run out they realized they had to do some kind of work or starve. If the economy recovers (unlikely, but let's adopt the hypothesis), they'll look for less demanding and more lucrative work. The shortage will never go away.

Underpaid area, government should stop paying so much for crap like IT and balance wages more with social and health caring businesses.

The medical insurance system reimbursement for the type of work they do puts an effective salary cap that is so low that people cannot live on it.

My wife has that same certification (she got it for practical training in helping her elderly mother) but even though she's currently out of work she'd rather stay unemployed for the limit of her benefits than take work at that pay level.

I am glad that atleast there is some hope with these changes.Glad the housewives are taking a share in the work. Like mirical says, these jobs should be well paid. If there is some possibility, I don't mind doing some relief work for a few hours over the weekend.

I know one thing, I would never do this kind of back breaking work with the crap pay of 120,000 yen a month. I can't believe that there actually paying that kind of garbage. I can imagine the low quality of care the patients must be receiving. Everyone hired in the nursing field should have some school training and a license. I guess they'll just hire any bum off the street to take of grandma, and can continue to pay people crap because they don't have any standards to qualify for a the job. I guess they should hire and exploit Filipino's to do the job, while management of the facilities get richer just carrying a suitcase.

It doesn't say their pay is 120,000/month, it says "The monthly pay for a male care assistant was lower by an average 120,000 yen in 2007." Thus, it is that much lower than a regular salary may (assuming you can find a regular salary man type job). Anyways, these jobs are probably better than hakken shain, and, you can probably make the same pay in Tokyo as in a rural area, so work in a rural area and your money will go farther.
