Wow! What an invention at this time in Japan. The clapping hands will be really useful in the decontamination and cold shutdown efforts.

I don't think a clapping hands robot will be useful for about 20-30 years, when the Fukushima will be decommissioned and all the nuclear fuel and waste has been removed. Only then will they need a clapping robot.

does it have a slow sarcastic clap mode? Thus depicting the makers feeling about replacing humans and making everything fake, then he can die in peace. OR else he might do something useful for life as it currently exists. Wouldn't want that. That would mean 1) making decisions, 2) having an opinion.
Um... Heaven forbid the audience enjoy the sounds of the ... audience.
Secondly, note the design fail on the laser tsunami warning. If everyone is indoors or if outside never looks at the sky as they are too busy looking at their shoes then it's not going to work. But, yeah spend untold millions on it and see how it goes.
File this under "They used to do this" for future generations wondering why Japan fell apart and couldn't deal with any problem at any level in a rational or meaningful way

I thought at first it was NK's Kim Il clapping and then I read the story.

Onniyama - why do you live under the illusion that all of Japan should suddenly work at solving Tepco's problems? I for one find this robot interesting. I'm sure that with a bit of programming it could also give a realistic sound while slapping your face (or bottom).

The 3-D laser projector has me intrigued. The applications would be impressive. Not to mention very Blade Runner-esque.

Hand clapping and the Bat Signal. Next a spanking machine...

The robot mockingly applauds the impending doom of human civilisation.

Not even the Zen one-handed clap?

I think a hand-clapping robot would be nice. One could give speeches, and really feel that one's message was well-received. Human's always seem to show evidence of boredom, and they are much harder to program. I expect governments all over the world to buy these things for gala events. They could be rented to end parties in Japan as well. ClapClapClap ClapClapClap ClapClapClap Clap

A couple of tweaks to the program and these machines will be soon appearing in the seedier districts of Japan..........

I hope the person who introduced it had mastered the 'L' pronunciation.
