So perfect for the Japanese culture...

I still think it's a monumental waste of time. Get outside, people :p

One can twitter outside, you know. In fact, I see twits everywhere I go.

I thought the brevity imposed by the 140 character limit was part of the appeal of Twitter. Not so in Japan?

Twitter is like haiku,”

'What is the sound of one hand twittering'? just doesn't work...

4 words...Twitter makes people stupid....

I use twitter as a source for website updates, latest news downloads etc. Might not make me smarter, but it saves a lot of browsing. Thus I have more time to play outside. heh.

Hate twitter. Soundbites only. Not interesting.

Twitter ...another "Netscape".

Facebook features Friends. Twitter focuses on content. Japanese having very limited social networks won't flock to facebook. They flock to content. That said, I feel sorry for Japanese people due to the face they really don't have real friend nor the ability to make them. Had one person actually say she would get tired to consonantly only chat with friends. She wants to be anonymous online and not followed.

Nobody cares what you're doing, how you're feeling, or what your plans are. The level of ego required to maintain the belief that they do is mind boggling.

Some tech analysts in the States have doubts about the long term viability of Twitter. How is MySpace doing? That said, who knows? Japan might end up being the only place in the world it flourishes.

... but 'An old pond, a twit jumps in, sound of water' does. Would be better if you changed the vowel in the word 'twit' though.

In all fairness, I despise twitter. Especially when people link it to their facebook....

TheQuestion: the same thing could be said about your comments and mine on this article or others. even worse, most of our statements on this site are basically opinion devoid of hard facts that could be useful to others.

@ jason6: Good point. I think 'TheQuestion was trying to demonstrate the meaning of 'oxymoron'

Change the header from Japan Today to Twitter, cut a few letters off a couple of the comments above AND..you've all just twittered. Congratulations. Oh wait..that was way more than 140 characters.

Its like Yahoo! being more popular than Google or Bing These people do like to mumble about themselves

Not sure where you get the idea that Twitter is people talking about they are doing or thinking. I very rarely see anything like that on Twitter. Twitter is by far the best thing about the world in 2010. People are connecting, sharing information and ideas and working together to make a difference.

It is fantastic that Japan is embracing it

Note that mumble rhymes with grumble...

tapped into a greater sense of individuality in Japan

This is from the second paragraph, which was far enough for me. It should come as no surprise these social networking sites (Mixi included) are so popular in Japan, the escapist society. Everyone can be nine feet tall and made of steel on Twitter.

Just wait till foursquare is ported over.

There is a strange irony about the people who are also multiple posters on this site and happy to slag off twitter users for micro blogging. These same people are using the same form of social media (JT) to express their thoughts etc everyday.
