What is the big deal about konnyaku in Japanese culture? If somebody wants to make a formal proposal of marriage, nobody should be complaining. The whole world does it.
The book The Okinawa Program by Willcox, Willcox and Suzuki has several pages devoted to Konnyaku and in the main it is noted for the fibre it contains. Konnyaku keeps your innards clean and this is one of the reasons the Okinawan people live such long lives. Heck, I am 88 and clean as a whistle.

Apparently konnyaku is almost as good as the real thing if you heat it up first.

My wife makes me eat konnyaku, and I pretend to like it. Altria buys the stuff and pretends to eat it.

Konnyaku is also mentioned to be very effective in the treatment of diabetes. There is no cure but it is a step in the right direction.

It takes 3 years to grow konyaku to harvest size. It's dug up at end of growing season and replanted at next.
I like it in sukiyaki but not crazy about it.

From what my gf told me, young japanese like to warm it up in the microwave and use it as a cheap "stimulation" toy.
How she got to know that I have no idea and don't want to know...
