Good to see this magazine, and hopefully the young mothers can afford to keep buying it. ¥10,000 on clothes for the mother? What about baby? They get big fast and always need new clothes and diapers. I hope they keep all the receipts for diapers etc., that they buy in drug stores, as it is tax deductible...but they are probably not paying taxes anyway, as they do not make enough.

One thing I have noticed in the 10 years I have lived here is that - Image is everything and everything is image. Nothing else seems to really matter in this 'mostly' shallow society. Therefore it is no surprise to see a 'New Mum' magazine talking about fashion and hair colour.

Why they don't teach mothers some simple basics such as: Lock the cars doors and ensure the child locks are activated. Make your kids wear seat-belts, don't place items under windows to prevent your child from climbing up to the window, always keep a vigilant an on your child etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

shufu> Maybe I am patronising, but I am sceptical when I see babies having babies..and mainly because they don't have proper support emotionally or financially. This magazine will no doubt provide them with some info and networking to a degree and they will no doubt need that as young single mums.Which is not to insinuate that I will be the world's best dad..I will be the first to say I am scared ****less.Maybe they will make a Men's Egg version of this mag for us poor blokes too.

Dudes, this is a magazine, whose purpose is to make money. It isn't some sisters of charity project. It is a fashion magazine, filled with adverts designed to con young gals into buying more stuff they don't need through the marketing tactic of "making them feel good, like they're part of a group."

From a marketing angle, it's pretty standard. Find an unexploited niche, and exploit it until you bleed it dry. Props for that.

I read the October issue of this magazine, and it wasn't any worse than a normal fashion magazine. It features ads for women's and children's clothes, easy-to-do hairstyles, tips on how to save money on everyday items (like carrots people, not just clothing), and recipes.

Right now it only partially appealed to me, since I'm not a mama, but if I do have kids I think I would purchase this magazine regularly. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good (or decent) when someone is a mother. Oftentimes women have kids and just let go of themselves. Please just remember that this isn't a magazine just for pregnant moms, or a parenting magazine. It's a fashion mag for moms.

I haven't seen the magazine myself, but as for the "fashion magazine for moms" aspect, what is wrong with that? I remember when I was a kid (fourth child of a working mom, civil engineer at that) my mom used to exercise a lot more than she does now and she liked magazines such as Good Housekeeping, Family Circle and Woman's Day. I remember those magazines had family and home related articles, crafts, recipes and fashion. My father has never had any bad comments on those. She still likes Woman's Day magazine (my parents are both retired now). My mom does not go the extra-mile to look fashionable (yet her photos from the 1960s and 1970s are quite fashionable), but she always kept a smart, healthy and professional look. There is nothing wrong with keeping yourself groomed when you are a mother .__.;.

God forbid a young mom wants to look fashionable! It's nice a woman isn't expected to slap on the dowdiest clothes possible here once she has a kid.

Yet, another trashy magazine full of Japanese urban myths. I see no mention of any professional advice within this rag. I'm sure it will be a hit with all the trailer trash in Saitama.

I wonder how this will affect the rising number of single mothers. My guess is a magazine like this will only encourage unmarried women to get pregnant....

bdiego, 10k yen per month is more like $120usd not $1200.

  • Blue_Tiger at 09:42 PM JST - 3rd October

Still, telica, thats a pretty good amount of coin every month for clothes....

What do you expect from the most materialistic society in the world? In Japan, image is very important and everything follows under some kind of fashion. Not so much of individuality. As a result, its not strange to see a trend of "yan mama". I have seen many women in Nagoya in high heels and make up treating their kids like they are some kind of pet. If the family values were strong enough, there wouldn't have been so many single moms.

As for the magazine, its clearly a trashy magazine that belongs to the fashion genre.

“I think the magazine became popular because we featured the actual lives of ‘gal mothers,’” said Ayako Yamashita, 39, editor in chief of the magazine. “We want readers to feel that it is great to become a mom.”

"Feel its great to become a mom" by giving "fashion advices"...??? O tempora o mores...

"I cooked steamed rice using chestnuts"

    Maitake is even better.

  • stirfry at 09:42 AM JST - 4th October

I cooked steamed rice using chestnuts

more likely the rice cooker did all the work and you just turned it on...good skill set though

Perhaps some of you guys would like to see young moms, cut their hair short, cook dinner, do your washing, serve you tea, wait at the dinning table, bring your a can of asahi when you return from work?
