Kudos to the NZ rescue squad for working around the weather. Instructions even included in Japanese? Wow.

they had taken too much gear, slowed them down. The guide was unlicensed for the area as well but maybe he wasn't guiding.

Too bad they both didn`t make it. Even in summer at that altitude extreme weather must be incredibly difficult to deal with. For a week too.

Even though Japanese visitor numbers in the South Island has dwindled over the past few years, it's touching to know that the Kiwis remember the Japanese :)

NZ is famous for incredibly changeable weather. It can be sunny and warm and then an hour later freezing cold and rain. On the mountains it is more extreme so lots of people die because they don't prepare equipment for any situation.

This implies that he died after the rescue of the first climber. It should read "2nd one dead."

They were both alive last night but a storm blew away their tent. They got seperated and only one survived
