1-year-old girl falls to her death from 8th floor apartment

A one-year-old girl fell to her death from an 8th floor apartment balcony in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, police said Wednesday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4 p.m. Tuesday. NTV quoted police as saying that the child, identified as Noe Tomizawa, had come with her mother and three-year-old brother to visit her aunt. Noe was playing with her brother on the balcony when the accident occurred, police said.

Witnesses saw the girl fall and hit the roof of the entrance below. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the balcony railing was about 120 cms high. There was a chair on the balcony and police believe Noe climbed up on it before falling over the railing.

Japanese balconies are so small and narrow. I cannot help but feel that a major reason the little ones climb the rail is that there is no other place to go. Its not like you could even move a chair or any other furniture away from the railing except to put it in the apartment itself.

Don't leave anything that can be used as a foothold in the balcony, especially if you have children.

Why why why do these things keep happening? Soooo sad... RIP little girl

As a parent myself, I'm always keeping an eye out for my boy (he's 15 months). Especially at this age when they are always curious and trying their best to fit through holes or climb up stools, you have to be really cautious, as they're really quick and you never know what they're going to do the next second!

When my grandkids go out on our 7th floor balcony, I stand in the doorway and watch them, and they are 6 and up.

Shame on you parents, and every other people that let their child run off sight in that age...

It is sad to have all these avoidable deaths happening. I have an impression that they are cases of negligent parenting. Japanese parents need to be more careful. The reason I am pointing fingers is that I have a Japanese wife at home who manifests similar poor parenting. She is very unsuspecting. She fails to anticipate danger. And she has failed to learn from me. We have two little kids and she showers them with dangerous toys - some too small and can be swallowed and choke the kids. If I throw them away, after 2-3 days she buys more for them. She puts an infant who is crawling on a high bed and leaves him without supervision and the infant falls and she will never learn from it! She is teaching toddlers how to put electric switches off and on! Where I come from that is a big NO because a toddler does not understand the dangers yet. She takes toddlers to play on the tarmac! So when I read about these accident in Japan, I cannot help but think about my Japanese wife. I am very much worried about the kids when she is away with them. I am just lucky that we do not leave on the 8th floor.

Don't let kids play on high porches, decks, stairs or balconies. If it's unavoidable make sure they are supervised by an adult.

Japanese parents need to be more careful

A very similar death (from a lower floor) ocurred just the other day in New York. Unfortunately the Japanese have no monopoly on inattentive parenting...

A totally preventable tragedy. I can't say it was an accident if it was preventable. Apartment balconies are not playgrounds for kids and when you have some in attentive mullet that puts tables and chairs on the balcony and let's the kids play there unsupervised this is what happens. It's a tragedy, but it's not an accident! It's just the result of stupidity.

How cruel! A family just lost their 1 year old. Your sympathy should be going out to the family instead assuming bad parenthood. You only know a short clip of the story and still so quick to jump to conclusions.

So, are you saying that allowing your one-year-old baby girl unsupervised access to an 8th-floor balcony was good parenting? It's not an assumption, it WAS bad parenting.

Accidents do occurr, let's not judge here. I'm sure nobody wished this to happen, all the more the parents, whether it was bad parenting or good...it's a lesson to be learned to parents out there for it not to make it happen again.. RIP little sweet girl.

Yeah, how many parents have never at any time been at risk of losing their kids at some point, but just got lucky? i can think of at least a couple hair-raising incidents.

Oh, ok then super-sampathizer! Would you let your one-year-old play on a 8th floor balcony with chairs on it and leave her unattended? That's is just stupid!

That poor little girl. Finger-pointing aside, I do feel bad for the whole family. This is a terrible tragedy, and I'm sure they're going through hell right now. Her life is over and theirs will never be the same.

We always have the same discussion when a child dies and the story shows up here. If they fall out the window, are hit by a train, or drown in the kawa, etc , it only happens when they are not supervised. And why are they not supervised? Because the responsible person is taking out the trash, distracted by their cell phone, or busy cooking dinner, etc. Your priority as a parent should be the welfare of your child.

By not using their cellphone, and/or cooking dinner? And how exactly do you expect anything to get done? You obviously aren't a parent, or you would realize that it's impossible to watch your child every minute of the day and also provide their necessities.

@ Strangerland - I've raised children and grandchildren, so you are incorrect. Of course things need to "get done", and if your child's safety is paramount, you'll find a way to do them without putting them at risk. The problem is, some people get careless or complacent, and things like this happen. Did I say don't use your cell phone, no. Try sitting down with your child if you do. Gotta take out the trash? Put it outside the door, it can wait. If you're cooking dinner, lock the balcony door. The bottom line is, another child is dead because of poor choices by her parent.

And you're honestly telling me that you watched them 24/7 without ever taking your eyes off them? Yeah, right. Either your memory is failing, or you are exaggerating.

"you're honestly telling me that you watched them 24/7 without ever taking your eyes off them" Did I say that? "Either your memory is failing, or you are exaggerating" Way to attack my character for something you said. What I DID say was find a way to do what needs to be done without putting your children at risk.

Poor little girl, born to an IDIOT FOOL with NO common sense of a mother! Now this poor little girl is DEAD!! Why?? The idiot mother was too LAZY to keep an eye her 1 year old kid! Oh, is she GUILTY?? HELL YES!! What kind of an idiot fool leaves 1 year old to go play by themselves on the balcony of the 8th floor?? and as a PARENT, I completely agree with SENSEI258!! Sure it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep an eye on your kids 24/7!! But does a RESPONSIBLE PARENT let their kids near DANGER????? NO!!!!! Too many stupid, lazy parents out there, and it is NOT only in Japan, but my guess these idiot fools are ALL over this planet!! RIP poor little angel

I'm still trying to figure out how this is possible. A 1-year old falls off a balcony??? How?

Someone else must be involved...

You keep saying your JAPANESE wife, but the fact she has bad parenting habits has nothing to do with her nationality. Whatever nationality she is, the reason she does not learn is because she has not experienced danger.

When she buys small toys for your little ones, do you just throw them away? Why don't you set a rule like if she buys toys that are not safe, she loses something (money? Or anything that she likes, you take it away from her instead of just throwing out those toys). If she leaves a small baby on the bed and leaves him/her there unsupervised, why don't you ask her to lie on the bed and push her off the bed to see how she feels (seriously...). If she insists to teach your toddlers to put electric switches off and on, then you should make her learn how to use the electric saw and see how she feels. If she says those are dangerous, then you can tell her that you are only doing the same things she is doing to your little ones.

Some people don't learn until THEY experience. Your kids' safety is something that cannot be sacrificed.

That is very true. Unfortunately, they do have a monopoly on incredibly low birthrate. Japan needs all the babies it can get, and can't afford to lose them in such a careless fashion.
