    Not good.

According to Mainichi, Otis Elevator (Escalator) was the manufacturer.

i don't see how an escalator going UP could cause so many to get hurt, unless it was going rather fast -- then again, it was connected to the 4th floor, so maybe it was...

good thing the escalator wasn't going DOWN, as i'm sure just about everyone would have fallen and gotten hurt.

    Those darn Crocs!

it is a 16 meter long escalator, with more than 160 people in it. If you have seen the video you will be amazed how retarded these people are thinking that the escalator is the same as a rush hour train. 16 meters, fully packed, not 2, but 3 or 4 people lined sideways. The motor gave way and the escalator due to its weight lost traction and started to slide. The problem is nobody can run so everybody has to get off quick unless you want the whole weight of people above you pin you to the ground. And yes, I say retarded again because nobody run upstairs but just waited for the escalator to slide down.

That's it - ban all escalators there are a danger to society. Little Taro gets a scraped ankle if it stops abruptly.

Why is this even news? A member of staff pressed the emergency stop button, on presumes he had a reason, maybe taro jr had his feet stuck in the escaltor.

Shows what a slow news day it is when the barometer goes up like it did over the weekend

I say retarded again because nobody run upstairs but just waited for the escalator to slide down.

Actually at least one person ran up, he said so on the news report last night. Only the people at the very front would have been able to move forward though, right? I have been on an escalator which stopped abruptly and it is actually very difficult to keep your balance.

I hardly think you can blame any of the people on the elevator for falling, being injured or anything else that happened. Just a freak accident.

it still seems japanise lift system is not safty for.

What?! There are how many thousands of escalators carrying how many millions of people a day in this country? And how many accidents? Walking along the sidewalk is probably far more dangerous.

I agree with Miki... people in Japan load an escalator the way they load a rush hour train. Escalators and Elevators are made in Japan under license by Otis Elevator company. Otis which has a one hundred year history makes these devices all over the world. But only in Japan they overload and exceed the weight restrictions, run up and down escalators and bring strollers on with them. Only Japanese consistantly break every rule posted on escalators and then when someone gets hurt they blame everyone but themselves.....

People all over the world break the rules with riding escalors - not just here in Japan.

  • European1 at 06:08 PM JST - 4th August

The escalator was manufactured by Nippon Otis Elevator Co...

Thats it, no comments. It will go like a wind. If it were foreign maker Im sure they would be out of business and needed to apologize plus of course full TV coverage whole day from morning.

  • Apsara at 10:37 PM JST - 4th August

Only Japanese people run up and down escalators?! Honestly, where do people come up with these comments?

  • bushlover at 05:50 AM JST - 5th August

There must be a weight limit and it seemed it got exceeded. And by the way: [ a right cut to his right ankle] What's a right cut? how is it different from a left cut?

Anyone see the photo in the Yomiuri today ? This thing was packed to the hilt ! What in the world inspires the Japanese to cram as many people into such confinded spaces ? Whether it be apartments in Tokyo, the rush hour train, shopping centers, or now escalators. Make no mistake, this is a unique problem in Japan. I mean 4 people wide on an escalator built to hold for two. Not to mention the obvious miscalculations in weight design. These things are designed to hold 3 people with an average weight of 65 kilos on one step. Are you kidding ? All those metabolic fatsos ? This ride was doomed from the opening bell.

I hope safety japan puts signs up warning people about escalators. We need more government intervention to keep everyone safe. Hell, I had to put a sticker on my seadoo today warning everyone about the dangers of carbon monoxide being emmited from the motor. I'll try not to suck on the tailpipe and definatly hold onto the rail when im on an escalator
