A 6th grade elementary school girl who was pulled unconscious from the bottom of her school pool on June 10 died Thursday without having regained consciousness, hospital officials said.
The girl, Sakura Nakaune, was taking part in a swim class at the Odamaki municipal elementary school in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, when she slipped below the surface and did not come up.
TBS reported that although there were two teachers supervising the class, neither of them noticed that anything had happened to the girl. There were 53 students in the pool at the time, police said.
A classmate spotted Nakaune on the pool bottom and alerted a teacher. By the time the swimming instructor brought Nakaune up, she had already lost consciousness. She was rushed to hospital but fell into a coma and passed away just before 4 p.m. Thursday.
According to other students, Nakaune was not exhibiting any odd behavior or complaining of any abnormal physical ailments prior to the accident, TBS reported.

Possibly, if the teachers new CPR this little girl would still be alive.

Accidents happen but we can't blame the under trained teachers.
We need to blame the government for overworking teachers and not providing training, regulation and funding to create a safe environment.

Yes 2 adults to 53 kids - roughly what you would get at any local public pool, and these kids were not tiny, but 11-12 years old. This was tragic but reasonably, it was a terrible accident. Not anyones fault.

Accidents are unplanned events but 2 teachers overseeing 53 kids in a pool is waiting for a disaster to happen. You just can't assume everyone can swim!! I have a huge in ground swimming pool in my home and during the summer many of the neighborhood kids come over. My first rule is first you must know how to swim, second I have to get verbal permission from the parents!! California is a "SUE FIRST" state an ask question later. May this little girl rest in peace.

It was a swimming class. How big of a pool was this that 53 kids were in it at the same time and able to learn to swim? There should never have been that many kids in the pool at the same time with only two adults to supervise them. If one or both of the teachers were in the pool with the kids that's even worse because their overview of the pool would have been severely limited. To say this was just an accident is wrong and that kind of attitude is what prevents people from actually thinking for themselves and using a little foresight to prevent such a tragedy from happening. What people lazily like to call "accidents" are usually the result of carelessness, stupidity and cowardliness.
