SENDAI —
Rescue operations continued Tuesday for 12 missing people after Saturday’s devastating earthquake that hit northeastern Japan and left 10 people dead so far. Three of the 12 are believed to be buried under a hot spring inn that collapsed in Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture, while one is thought to be around a landslide-hit construction site also in Kurihara.
Four people remain unaccounted for around a waterfall in Kurihara, while a couple in their 50s from Yamagata Prefecture is missing on the 1,627-meter Mt Kurikoma where they went to collect wild vegetables. Rescuers from police, firefighting department and the Self-Defense Forces said they concluded the day’s search at 7:30 p.m. and plan to resume the work Wednesday morning.
