13 children hospitalized after falling ill at Saitama school

SAITAMA —

Thirteen elementary school children were hospitalized on Monday after being sickened by a noxious substance at their school in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, police said Tuesday.

According to school officials, the children were sickened by fumes from a radiator. The children complained of a bad smell and told teachers their eyes and throat hurt, school officials said.

Those heaters they use need ventilation and airing of the room all the time. Some teacher must have forgotten.

Maybe if they cleaned the radiator... I get sick EVERY year when they turn on the air con and heaters as the dust and dirt in them is sickening.

I hope it was not from whale meat during lunch.

Took the words out of my mouth. But it probably was.

Great. I am shocked at how badly maintained a lot of these public schools seem to be. And I am sending my daughter into one from April. It looks pretty on the outside thanks to a recent paintjob, but the inside is dank, dark and crumbling.

Hey, that could be a metaphor!

This is really surprising to me, I thought these schools were in tip top condition. This is because so much care is taken in enforcing child safety measures for foeigner and Japanese teachers/visitors. for eg.

1.No sweets on the school compound 2.no fruits should be eaten infront of kids cause kids can't eat fruits at school!!! 3.no soda/sofdrinks or PET bottles infront of kids 4.No earings 5.No done up nails 6.eat only the foods that the kids are allowed to eat 7.If a child comes in the staffroom while you are on your lunch break...you should stop eating, even if the child is not there to see you.

One would think that something as serious as that radiator would have been top priority if such care is taken to 'protect' these kids on a regular basis. I think some lawsuits are in order.
