14 children died in nurseries in 2015, Cabinet Office says

Fourteen children died at nurseries in Japan in 2015, according to Cabinet Office figures. Of the 14, six were discovered dead lying face down, Fuji TV reported. Seven of the dread infants were younger than 12 months.

The Cabinet Office also said that while nurseries have been advised to make sure infants do not sleep face down, the six who were found dead in that position were at unlicensed child care facilities.

In an effort to alleviate the long waiting list to enroll children in local nurseries, Health and Welfare Minister Yasuhisa Shiozaki this week called an emergency meeting among local government leaders to address this issue. One mayor who participated in the meeting said wages of nursery school teachers should be improved on a national level, as opposed to the current system in which wages differ regionally.

unacceptable negligence. The levels of incompetence in professionals is staggering, as is the lack of care for the well being of children

Why aren't these unlicensed places not allowed to open until they are actually licensed? I know the answer is because there is not enough space at licensed places, and they are a cheap alternative, but surely the government is aware that the deaths of children is not acceptable, regardless of how 'few' they may be relative to people who use such places. It's criminal negligence on all levels!

And WHY is the government only proposing, thus far, to INCREASE the number of kids accepted in daycares and has no other solid ideas? Hate to break it to them, but given the largest problem is a shortage of facilities and the workers to work at them, you don't increase the number of kids accepted as a solution to the problem... at least not until after the first two major problems have been dealt with. Adding more kids to an already strained system is just going to cause more problems, including more deaths like these.

Also should be educated on SIDS no baby should be placed face down.
