This would of been so painful, i can atleast hope he passed out from pain before it got to bad and swallowed him.. RIP kid, and my sympathy goes to the family and friends.

It does seem like he did it purposely, but maybe he wasn't trying to kill himself, which makes this situation worse.. knowing that he might of accidently set himself of fire is very upsetting. If it was purpose, what was the reason?

A 14-year-old [...] set himself on fire [...] and no suicide note has been found.

In the facts given in the report is no evidence that it was suicide. It could very well be a disguised murder.

Here's a question for you. Imagine you are walking by with a camera in your hand. Would you take pictures of the event or try to put him out?

  • mael at 09:42 PM JST - 22nd August

Ans:- I would help if i was able but if I was unable or not useful then I'd take pics.

If it was a member of my family I'd barge right in there if there were 'helpers' and probably set myself alight putting the fire out.

Hmmm! I'd weigh the situation and measure my response by how much I cared about the person on fire.

    How about you?

As a prior Law Enforcement officer and experience, these police officers are judging way to fast. I detect a little corruption and possibly payoff. Common sense and history, when people burn themselves alive it has always been a statement they wanted observed. The boy didn't leave a note. People don't burn themselves when alone. No one wants the most painful death imaginable when committing suicide. Quick and fast is sorry to say the normal view of suicide. If he poured gasoline on himself, why wasn't the bottle and the remaining tissue burned due to it's close proxymity.

I detect foul play and not suicide. Every camera in a 10 block radius will determine who the boy was with before he died. Why are police statements so ready to the public seconds after it is written anyhow. LAME!

It would be interesting to know if this was an intentional act, or a bit of tom foolery gone wrong.

    interesting tomfoolery. not tragic?

Self-immolation still seems really popular in these Buddhist countries. Glad I'm not from one!

I just hope your not from one of those non-Buddhist countries where other-immolation is popular.

What's a 14 year old doing out at 2am? something's not right here!

Yes, that was my first thought too, let alone the guy BURNED HIMSELF ALIVE!

Nothing says he was alive when the witness saw him. Police say he was dead when they found him. All the implements used were in a bag 100 meters away. So ... he lit himself on fire then put the lighter back into his bag without so much as getting a burn mark on the bag? It really does sound like someone could have done this to dispose of his body after killing him, and then did a poor job of framing it as a suicide. There may be more information regarding wether he was alive while burning or not, but still, how did the lighter get back in his bag?

Well, I'm not Batman, so I'll leave the detective work up to the J-cops. RIP kiddo.

nowhere does it mention the materials were in his bag. his name was in his bag. You are most assuredly no batman

  • notimpressed at 10:40 AM JST - 25th August

Thanks Spudman, you saved the day! whats your secret identity? ANyway, the article has been edited to remove the 100metres part, and it does say the bag was with the materials, the wording is not clear. A bag with such and such items, could indeed mean to contain them or just hang about beside them. Anyway, you missed the point. It really doesn't sound like suicide at all.

Poor kid, I hope he finds peace in the next world.

  • greensatindress at 07:16 PM JST - 25th August

wait a minute here...am I the only who thinks this may not be a suicide? There has to be more to this story. I find it hard to believe one would commit suicide this way, much less a 14-yr. old?!?!?!

  • elbudamexicano at 11:19 PM JST - 26th August

Sick, sad and just down right weird! How can a 14 year old do such a thing! RIP kid from Nagoya!
