16 students fall ill after inhaling chloride gas in Yamagata pool
YAMAGATA —
Sixteen students fell ill Tuesday night after inhaling chloride gas while swimming in an indoor pool in Yamagata City, police said Wednesday. The incident happened around 7.30 p.m. while 80 elementary, junior high and high school students were using a swimming school’s indoor pool. Some of them complained of sore throats and felt nauseous.
Sixteen students received medical attention, and seven of these were admitted to hospital. None of them were reported to be in serious condition, police said.
According to police, one of the pool staff mistakenly put sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, into the filtration tank, which resulted in the production of the poisonous gas. Students near the filtration system also reported feeling ill.

My daughter is finally going to be starting hoikuen soon and I do know they take them to pools. Now I am scared crapless.

Oh my god, oh my god!!! All they wanted was a lovely little paddle and this happens. It is awfull, how can such a beastly thing happen?
