16-year-old girl hangs herself after message on blog tells her to die

KITAKYUSHU —

Police on Sunday said they are investigating the death of a 16-year-old high school girl who hanged herself on Thursday apparently after receiving an anonymous message on her school blog telling her to die.

According to police, the girl—a student at Mihagino Girls’ High School—hanged herself in her room at home on Thursday morning. Her parents notified police and the school. The parents told police that she had left a suicide note saying that a message on her blog had told her to kill herself. A school official said the message had been sent to the girl’s blog on Monday.

    Very sad.

It has been my experience that Japanese people of all ages are extremely sensitive to any kind of negative comment about them. Of course nobody likes negative comments but people in Japan seem to really take criticism/stupid comments in a bad way.

Such a waste! Just another victim of this epidemic. I wonder how long it will be and how many more teenagers will take their own lives before the Jp Gov. decides to take real steps to address the problem of teenage suicide and suicide in general. 30,000 suicides a year and most of them teenagers is something you don't see on the tourism advertising. There was some laimo jumped off the Musashino line this morning, just to add one more to the total.

Very incomplete story. There is no way that a single "die" message led to a girl killing herself.

Oh really? What about the fathers who physically/sexually abuse their daughters? Who knows what else this poor girl was experiencing in her home life as well.

This is much like the Megan Meier Suicide Case. hope they find who did it...

@medievaltimes: Very true and then in some cases they either go kill themselves or they kill/attack others, destroy flowers or crash with their car into a group of elementary school students. I guess it has partly to do with their history with harakiri and dying with honor etc. Japanese should value life much more and take negative comments about them less serious.

Most likely this is another girl with mental problems that were not noticed by the school, and were not being treated. She didn't kill herself because one messaeg on a blog said so, unless she had other severe problems. Mental problems needs to be properly diagnosed and addressed here.

Patrick_Smash...Disagree compelety. If you have ever raised teenage kids, you would know that the mental pressure on them is enormous. They do not have to have "mental problems" in order to at least ponder suicide. Being bullied or ostrasized can make it seem like there is no sense in living, particularly in Japan, where acceptance is everything. And, schools rarely pick up the signs. I was lucky -- one of my kids was the victim of horrendous rumors that went on for a couple of months, and put him under tremendous strain. But, he came to me in time, and with the help of the school counselor/administration, and a private counselor, got him sorted out. My sincerest condolences to this girl's parents. They will be asking themselves "Why" and "What if" for the rest of their lives.

Whoa another suicide? Like I said it seems there is some new suicide story every day here on JT. How sad. She must've had undiagnosed/untreated mental illness.

I wonder how involved the parents were in this girl's day-to-day life? Seems many parents chat to their kids a few minutes at night and on the weekend and that's it! Especially if both parents work. Very sad.

Sad. I'm very sorry. When I was at High School and this kid tried to bully me, I got into trouble because I gave him a good thumping. But what do you know, I wasn't touched after that. But I guess it's hard for kids these days to stand up for themselves??

    Tragic, to say the least.....
