Dogdog, for a long long time it was the LDP who had the power. So even if it is not the same politicians, it is the same party, the LDP that is wholly responsible for the pension mess.

I mean, you try keeping track of 50.95 million public pension accounts - likely 50.95 bits of paper, then try entering them all accurately into a computer system and tell me where you think you would get.

Yes that does sound difficult for a one-man job. Maybe they should have hired a few more thousand to deal with it and it never would have happened.

It kid of surprises me that some people think that it all should have gone 100% accurately ...

Obviously not part of the one-in-six to be directly affected by widescale incompetence. Don't be surprised when you indirectly pay for it though.

You have an excellent point – entering data from hand written records that were originally written by poorly paid junior clerical staff, into a system many years later, is bound to result in errors. The fault lies in not recognizing the issue earlier, say in the data entry process so that less time would pass before corrections could occur.

Someone really needs to goto jail for this, it's clear no one thought this through and no tests or anything were carried out and peoples lives are now potentially destroyed from this!

we have the record keeping problem which is a collosal failure, but I suspect a much bigger problem is that there basically isnt any money to even pay for the records they can figure out, there shud be mountains of the stuff but we all know the LDP has be thieving the pension funds for decades so here we are pathetic record keeping & no $$$$$$$$ left.

Jpn & its people have only themselves to blame

This is just another reason the LDP should be turned out in the next election.

What a disgrace for the LDP.

That's why government should never take responsibility of managing people's lives and retirment. Markets could have provided better choices and services.

No one can really say that the account record keepers were negligent because they were paid poorl when documenting. In the US at some poit things had to go computerized and who do you think managed that. I believe your employer and after you leave a company, the account holder that manages it until you retire or are elgible to draw on it. I hope the government in this case speeds this up and once it is squared away makes policy that will make employers responsible for setting and managing this.

several other 1st world countries seem to have managed it

Nobody will go to jail and it's unlikely anyone will resign unless it's someone low down. Doing so would mean the LDP is admitting it has done wrong and made a mistake, and that surely won't happen.

Why do the Japanese have an amazing ability not to be disappointed?

Why is protection of a false image more important than admitting failure on a grand scale??? If the Japanese are truly disappointed over this (or any of the 100's of other reasons for being disappointed) where or where is the reaction? Exactly – it’s all FUBAR. As usual it will be just quietly swept under the carpet and not resolved or discussed. Why?

this money has been stolen or mismanaged. losing the files is just a cover up.
