Lack of physical exercise leads to diabetes? I didn't know that. I'd better hit the treadmill.

I'd say it's the abundance of high calorie foods. Don't most Japanese engage in some form of physical activity, even if it is walking to and from work?

Possibly? May have? Golly, with the socialized medicine and forced medical exams in schools and at work one would think that the government might have a better idea about the statistics.

jambon,
especially considering they know down to the man how many homeless and NEETS there are. I wondered about that 'may have' phraseology, too.

Not surprising. Despite having a tradition of healthy food (sushi, sashimi, broiled meats versus fried, vegetables, etc.), there sure is a lot of fried, mcfried and over-sugared garbage available.
I rode a train somewhere in Japan a few years ago, and this chubby little girl runs onto the car and stands in front of me, pulls out a big ol' chocolate bar and starts nibbling away. Heartbreaking! I just wanted to tell the kid not to repeat our (American) mistakes! And you just know the other kids probably harass her because of her weight.

How about coming to visit Japan once in a while to find out? There are apparently a lot of pretty and talented girls here as well.

It's such a myth that Japanese food is healthy. Western people tend to think that and try to eat Japanese food a lot. But what is healthy about Japanese food? Even some sushi, such as certain parts of the tuna, is not so health and is packed with cholesteral. I asked some Japanese people to name what is a healthy Japanese meal, but they could only come up with fish, vegetables and tofu. But they cannot claim fish, tofu and vegetables are their foods. Common and popular dishes are tonkatsu, tempura, yaki niku, curry rice, ramen, sukiyaki, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and a ton of other fried stuff. Nothing healthy in my book. Their secret to staying slim is only eating those things occasional and in small portions, but don't tell me that Japanese food is healthy. Their getting diabetes on their on foods.

Well, maybe a doctor out there can help with this, but I thought that having diabetes meant that your body doesn't produce enough insulin (Type 2), or doesn't produce insulin at all (Type 1).
If you are diagnosed as having diabetes, then controlling your blood sugar through a proper diet, and through getting enough exercise, is considered to be helpful.
I did NOT think that not getting exercise or eating poorly CAUSES diabetes, though certainly it may cause other problems. Am I mistaken about this?
