had it been earlier they have blamed it to 'global warming'.

Don't worry, they'll find a way. They don't let facts deter them...

Nothing like a good sweat in summer. At least you do end up with rotting clothes and moldy growths on certain areas of your body.

The day came 19 days later than last year and 14 days later than usual years

Tokyo weather affected by dramatic detour of al Nino, global warming to blame

I don't think Kanto even got enough rain to last us through the summer, and they say the end of the rainy season will be called for Monday... I just hope summer-like heat doesn't drag all the way through October like it did last year!

  • limosine at 03:46 PM JST - 4th July

Today was awesome here in Kokubunji!

Heat is not so bad. Humidity is a soul killing thing for me. I love the rest of the year in Tokyo. But Summer is awful.

As for warming. I love how much denial there is out there. Have you not heard the predictions that the North Pole will be ice free this summer for the first time in human history. What other evidence do you need? Denial is psychological illness. Get help.

"Thank god I'm in Hokkaido" ?

No !!! Thank God I'm completely outta Japan !!! Nothing worse on the planet than the hot muggy unbearable sweat stenched streets of Japan from early July to early September. You all enjoy yourselves... I'm off to the river with a sixpack a few tarts and not a care in the world... Bwahaha !

man the locals really get wound up about weather, don't they

tkoind2; hundreds of years ago, and even on a recent french game show the contestant and most of the audience thought the sun revolved around the earth. (youtube "le idiot") Just because the majority of people think that is the case it doesn't necessarily make it fact, does it? There are lots of signs that the earth is now entering a cooler period and Tokyo's late onset of the first tropical day is probably one of them. (Satellite data is another.) As for the apparent melting of the North Pole, do a search with phrases like 'volcanoes erupt beneath arctic ice' before you start accusing people of psychological illness.

Not only is summer exhaustingly hot and humid in Tokyo, but now you can't even get away from it at work as many businesses are instituting the 28-degree (83 Fahrenheit!) "Cool Biz" system. For us guys with hairy bodies and no option to wear shorts, it's a miserable, energy-sapping environment. I wonder if the government considered the loss of productivity that comes from having to work in such heat. In winter the "samugari" hardly have to suffer at all -- "warm biz" lowers the ambient temperature just one degree, to 20, while in summer it's a full seven degrees hotter inside than the old standard!

Yes mate. Yuriko Koike started this (cool biz) thing. She was defense minister for about five minutes last year, remember? I was at meetings at the MOFA and the DIET Govt buildings this week. It was absolute hell temp wise.

That is why the G8 is in a lovely cool lush place in Hokkaido

Bugger off Tokyo...it's been over 30 degrees in the western part of Japan for several days!
