2 people attacked by bear in Niigata

A man and a woman were injured by a bear in two separate incidents on the outskirts of Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, on Saturday.

According to police, the first incident happened at around 6:40 a.m. when an 81-year-old woman was attacked by a bear outside the entrance to her home, TBS reported. She suffered injuries to her head and face, but is in a stable condition, police said.

In the second incident, a 55-year-old man, who lives nearby, was attacked by a bear in the backyard of his home. He was bitten on the right arm and suffered facial injuries, police said.

Police and local wildlife officals said it was the first time that a bear had been seen in the area.

It's a black bear, so the best thing to do is punch the animal in the nose and watch it run away. Brown bears like those in Hokkaido are a bit different, but black bears are easy to deal with. And never try to climb a tree to get away, black bears climb faster and higher.

Basroil, you are so funny. It reminds me of when I was a child, I used to believe that if I was riding in a plane that was going to crash, I could jump off right before impact and survive.

These bears are many times stronger than a human, even if punching a bear was a proven method, by the time it grabs you, it will shake you so hard, you wont be able to punch it in the nose.

Excuse me for asking, basroil, but how do you know it was a black bear?

And are you honestly suggesting that an 81 year old woman (or man) should punch a bear on the nose?

But rest at ease. You don't really need be concerned about her climbing a tree to escape.

Gary, Basroil is almost certainly correct, as Asiatic Black Bears are the only bears found on Honshu. Unless a Hokkaido brown escaped from a zoo (and an 81year old lady would not have survived an encounter with a Hokkaido brown) it is an Asiatic black bear. Asiatic black bears are considerably smaller than American Black bears but much nastier tempered. Attacks are frequent, and (supporting Basroil's statement) most often fought off by the person attacked. Fatalities are fairly rare, even though the elderly appear to be frequent targets. Basroil's post, while perhaps a bit flippant, is not as nonsensical as you guys make it out to be.

Mature males weigh up to 150kg according to Wiki, so I would not mess with one!
