2 perish in Ibaraki fire

IBARAKI —

An elderly man and his daughter died in a 2-story wooden apartment fire Wednesday morning in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture. According to police, the victims were the 71-year-old owner of the apartment and his 44-year-old daughter.

Police said the fire apparently broke out on the first floor at around 5:45 a.m. A man walking by called 119 and it took firefighters about one hour to extinguish the blaze, TBS reported. The bodies of the two occupants were recovered and taken to hospital where they were confirmed dead.

Police said they have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
