2-year-old boy survives fall from 7th floor apartment

A two-year-old boy on Tuesday fell out of the window of a seventh-floor apartment in Tokyo and survived, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:50 a.m. in Katsushika Ward. Sankei Shimbun reported that a passerby called 119 to report that a boy was lying on the ground in front of the apartment building.

Police said it appears the boy climbed up on a bed and fell out of a window that was 35 cms above the bed. He fell about 17 meters onto a tree below, which cushioned the fall, police said.

The boy suffered injuries to his arms and right leg. He was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

The boy's 20-year-old mother was quoted by police she took her eyes off her son for just a few minutes when she went into another room.

The boy’s 20-year-old mother was quoted by police she took her eyes off her son for just a few minutes when she went into another room.

But, left him in a room with an open window. This kid is extremely lucky! I hope this young mother has learned that, it only takes a split second and your kid is gone! I also hope she has learned not to leave the flipping windows open on the 7th floor! "Ignorance can be cured, but stupidity cannot!"

Japan needs to install some windows that only open at the top diagonally in any building from 3rd floor up to prevent this from happening. Too many stories about kids falling from windows.

Yes.

I have done lots of baby sitting in my life and in a few seconds anything can happen. Normaly they find something and hit me with it and think its funny.

Glad he's going to be okay, but the parents should have put locks on the windows since they have a child. 100 yen would have averted this near-tragedy

It's easy to blame parents when something bad happens. "They should have done this." "They should have done that." And... Perhaps they should have.

However, considering the other side, it's really difficult to keep an eye on them all the time, especially when parents have to go to the bathroom, cook food, or do one hundred other things they have to do. It gets even harder with multiple kids at once.

Lucky kid.

I don't understand it. If you have a small child, why would you put a bed near a window they can reach? One can't keep their eye on their kids 24 hours a day but a little thought into such hazards would certainly stop many of these accidents.

Who else is responsible for the child's safety? 7th floor apartment with an open window and it didn't cross her mind to put a lock on it?

it is impossible to watch a kid without a single lapse

Absolutely true, and if there was a lock on that window this wouldn't have happened

natural selection. hard to protect children from parents who are children themselves

It may seem off topic, but it is not. The prevailing attitude that Japan is safe prevents thoughts on safety.

I have a three year old and live right next to a very busy street. It was a hell of a fight with my spouse, Japanese, to get something that works like a gate to keep the kid from running out in the stree. Another fight over window locks. Another fight to not jay walk with the kid or in front of the kid.

Luckily, we are in agreement on car safety and have a child seat but I see many family driving with children standing between the front seats.

In general, my spouse and inlaws have no concept of looking out for themselves and I have found the same to be true for the vast majority I have known here and for most I see on the street.

Additionally, when traveling and ask for a baby bed, the hotel staff put the bed right next to the window.
