20 Calif students quarantined in Japan for swine flu
DAVIS, Calif —
A group of 20 students studying in Japan through the University of California Davis have been quarantined after two of their Japanese tutors were diagnosed with swine flu. UC Davis summer abroad coordinator Kathy Cunningham said Wednesday the students arrived in Kyoto on June 27 and were quarantined to a dormitory on July 3.
She says Japanese health officials are monitoring the group for symptoms and that no students have shown any sign of the disease so far. She also says the quarantine is set to end Friday.

I'm loving this "soft power" Japan wants. Let's quarantine friends of the 20 students, and their friends, and their friends, and...heck, just quarantine the whole darn country

Were they the only ones quarantined? Since it was the Japanese tutors who had the flu, it would have been sensible to quarantine everyone THEY were in contact with, and not just these students. I'm also curious as to where these J-tutors caught the flu................. if you live in Kyoto, beware patient X, they may very well be Japanese!

i'm not sure if i'm understand this item correctly. are the being quarantined for their own good, or to prevent spread in japan, or to prevent spread back to california? i'm confused

Quarantine them, yet let the other Japanese with the flu run around? That makes sense, doesn't it?

Did they quarantine the families of the tutors? Regardless of whether or not the students, who don't seem to be infected, gave it to the tutors, the tutors are now capable of spreading it to others.
Can anyone clarify if it's just the California students or are the families of the Japanese tutors, the tutors themselves, and others they have been in contact with are quarantined?

They are quarantined because they try not to stay at home all day and they are going outside to take sightseeing all over in Kyoto. Quarantine is reasonable.
