21 people suffer from food poisoning after eating at Nagoya izakaya

A group of men and women, ranging in age from their 30s to 60s, suffered food poisoning at a Japanese pub in Nagoya on Dec 10, the operating company said in a statement on Thursday. Two of the victims were diagnosed with a form of norovirus, which is usually transmitted by contaminated food or water or by person-to-person contact.

The izakaya, part of the Sekai no Yamachan chain, is managed by SY Food Co Ltd, which runs 66 other stores throughout Nagoya, Tokyo and Kansai. In a statement, Sekai no Yamachan president Hiroshi Yamamoto said, "We are working to put countermeasures in place as quickly as possible. We have had no complaints from our other branches but we are aware that we have caused trouble for the customers in question."

It is believed the customers ate chicken wings, sushi and potato salad. To prevent further outbreaks, the store has been temporarily closed.

I don't recommend the chicken wings, sushi and potato salad.

Damn, any one of those three can get you sick if improperly prepared. (There's usually eggs in potato salad)

Newsflash Mr. Company President: you've could have killed "the customers in question" "Caused trouble", indeed!.

The quality of chain izakaya food has been dropping bad last 8-10yrs so skip them if possible, and I wont venture anywhere near the %$#& they put on belts at Y100 sushi joints that stuff is BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

Food poisoning? In Japan? I find that hard to beleive, with all the wonderful standards of cleanliness that exsist here, and the way the Japanese wash their dishes in lovely cold water! I`m joking, of course. Japan is classified as a "First World" country, but in my time here, I have had food poisoning about 5 times. I have walked out of eating places because of dirty plates, and even saw a giant rat in one little curry shop just after being served with my food.

Raw chicken in Japan is everywhere

I say that "if the chef has norovirus, give him a week off".

Wow, that stinks. :/ For the people who got sick. The people running that establishment ought to be ashamed of themselves. I agree with Fadamor, funny how he used "caused trouble for", as if getting ill is a minor inconvenience like getting your food an hour after ordering or not enough ice in your water glass. You did way more than that, buddy. Food poisoning is no joke.

judging from what i have observed in many restaurants here this is no surprise...yesterday i was in subway waiting in line for 10 minutes..when my turn came the girl behind the counter turned away and sneezed into her hand..she changed one glove that she had sneezed into but didnt seem to understand that she touched the dirty glove with the glove on the other hand which she didnt change...i have seen similar behaviour in many places here ranging from fast food chains to high end places...i think there is a general lack of understanding of basic food hygiene here...after i saw that i just left immediately...it disgusts me....if you are sick and working with food then at least wear a mask or maybe take a day off but i can understand if you take a day off you most likely dont get paid..

dannyarcher: While the example you mention is indeed disgusting and a typical example of poor hygiene (not limited to Japan, but I'll admit I've seen more than my fair share of people working in the food service industry who don't even bother covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze here), it's not what would have caused food poisoning by any means. At worst it would have caused a few people to catch a cold. This was either just bad cooking methods (not cooking the meat at high enough temperatures or for long enough times), using food that was past its expiry date, or tainted food. In the first two cases it's clearly the fault of the owner of that restaurant; in the latter case it would require an investigation into who's at fault.

I agree with smithinjapan.

Having read reports from health inspectors and many of the worst violators were 3+ star restaurants. Some of the reports made me choke as to what was observed and the example given here is tame.

This incident might be a simple miss like food was left too long in the fridge, etc. norovirus is harder to proof as it can be transfered anywhere.

Oh hell this is nothing in the last year alone the number of recalls for meat and other product and those sickened by the products in NA was astonishing and for nice little bugs like salmonella, e coli and listeria and we are not talking about one little restaurant but tons and tons of food.

This sort of food poising happens on a daily basis in other countries including Europe and NA but unlike Japan may only get a write up in the local news and not the national news, hell every year in my home city during Mussel season and oyster season at least one elderly person dies from bad shellfish, one of my family members is a paramedic in NYC and he has told me some amassing food poisoning stories.

All and all with Japan's population I am not surprised we don't read things like this on a daily basis.

smithinjapan understand what you are saying but if the person serving the food in subway and other places i have been to dont have basic understanding of hygiene then it isn`t a stretch to imagine that maybe something similar is going on in the kitchen regarding the food preparation..i am sure its just as bad in the UK where i am from if not worse but i never really dined out all the time until i lived here so this is my only frame of reference.nothing malicious, just lack of understanding.

NEVER order the mystery meat while flying either. ;)

Food poisonings are common from a hot dog stand to top-class restaurants.

In my home-country anyone working with fresh/raw food needs to get checked every 2 weeks for salmonella, e-coli(all strains), etc. That counts for supermarkets, butchers, restaurants, you name it.

Jesus, no apology? That's not very Japanese ... or is it the new Japanese? See if I ever eat there again.

Does not sound like a typical Japanese combo does it? Doro is going around. I know some students with it. Wash your hands, and clean shared computer key boards. I have been sick much more from food in the USA than here, but got nailed a few times here. Cutting that raw chicken on the same board as preparing horse sashimi is well, not too cool. But then again, I ate at an Asian place tonight but will not mention what kind or where, but the guy serving the food sneezed into his hands and then proceeded to pass out food. Disgusting. At another small Japanese place I often go to, the man does not wipe the cutting board at all, and when he closes the fridge, his hands peel off and make that iPhone mail sent swishing sound. Never got sick there though. Too salty.

at first i was thinking FUGU. But it must have been not cooked good checken. OR bad sushi meat/ sashimi. i wonder do they have food inspectors come & check these places out? as some of you mentioned Dirty plates & siverwear is bad But ive eaten in some Dirty play too & didn't get sick. olive Garden, chilies have dirty forks. the chinese restaurants are Dirty & the only sushi place in town is run by chinese people a very clean place BUT I Doubt they wash their hands good or Often.

Just hearing the word "izakaya" makes me sick. Hope they all recover swiftly and that place stays closed.

Had food poisoning a few times in japan in my first couple of years here. soon realised that each time i had food containing salad items. Since avoiding that i have had no prpblem, though the only things i tend to eat out these days are McDonalds or Lawson Onigiri. Prefer the taste, economy and safety of home cooking these days.
