Scary!!

Asiana airlines again? And pilot error on landing again? Something seems to be wrong with their training.

or something wrong with working conditions and wages.

or both?

Anybody flown into Hiroshima airport? That is one scary take off/landing. luckily, it did not skid off the cliff.

Oki....did you ever fly into the old Hong Kong airport? That was something else, and no accidents.

I wonder if the plane was on auto pilot. Were there two in the cock pit?

The Asahi newspaper reported that passengers began experiencing turbulence 30 minutes into the flight and cited one passenger who saw fire and smoke coming out of an engine. There was no immediate confirmation of the report.

Seems more likely to be engine problems rather than pilot error.

JapanGal, I beg to differ on the 'no accidents' statement you made about Kai Tak. In 1993, a China Airlines 747 ended up in the water just off the runway at Kai Tak. I remember seeing photos of it back then.

This Asiana one seems to have been too close to the ground, yet again, on approach to Hiroshima. Reports say they found a communications building damaged. If you collide with a stationary object, you are where you're not supposed to be.

If it were engine problems there would be a whole lot more confirmation than "one scared passenger reported this."

Flew into the old Kai Tak many years ago. Bit of a scary sensation looking out the windows and literally into the living rooms of the locals.

Calm wind conditions, only 2km/h, but Aseana aircraft basically too low on approach, clipped the ground ILS antenna in at the start of the runway, knocking down 12 out of 24 the steel posts and damaging left engine, part of the left wing, and presumably the landing gear. Hiroshima airport still closed this morning, no announced schedule for re-opening.

Yes Kai Tak was awesome the first time. Watching people in their lounge rooms as we approached the checker board mountain and thinking there is no possible way we are going to clear that mountain and then lose enough height to get down to the airport AND straighten up from the steep bank. We did though, albeit I could feel the plane still jumping sideways. I said to the guy next to me, "wow that was close". He replied casually," thats normal stuff here. That was a good one". Much more difficult than Hiroshima. Pity they built a new one in HK.

It is very understandable that not many passengers were boarded on Asiana as they knew something in the past..

If there had been an engine problem 30 minutes after leaving Seoul the pilot would have turned back or landed at the nearest airport.

yea i remember the old HK airport... always unnerving experience..

I expect that Korea will soon blame Japan for the accident and demand an apology.

From a photo I saw on BBC, Hiroshima airport looks much like another hilltop airport, Okayama. They were approaching too low and that's that....pilot error once again on the Asiana crew.

Luckily not crash.

kwatt, I only had good experiences on my Hiroshima-Europe flight with Asiana. Give 'em a break!

The Asiana Airlines jet accident this time has been making headlines not only in Japan but also throughout the world.

Local media reported that 23 people suffered minor injuries.

Um. No death toll. Nevertheless, they seem to have had a hairbreadth escape from death. It could have been worse.

Switching gears: I think we see and hear aviation accidents very often these days. What the hell is up?

We don't know that it was pilot error and we WON'T know until they finish the investigation.

If there had been an engine problem 30 minutes after leaving Seoul the pilot would have turned back or landed at the nearest airport.

The turbulence was experienced 30 minutes into the flight. There was no time-frame given on when the passenger thought they saw flames from an engine.

CNN has gone even farther than you in pointing out that there seems to be an awful lot of ASIAN AIRLINE accidents lately.

Fadamor Apr. 16, 2015 - 05:29AM JST The turbulence was experienced 30 minutes into the flight.

From the report, there was slight rain and a breeze at the time of the accident, but the atmospheric conditions weren’t too bad. The pilot was landing the plane using navigation instruments rather than autopilot.

That will have to be confirmed by the investigation. Initial conclusions indicate the craft was approaching the runway at a safe and correct altitude, but next, for a still unknown reason, it suddenly dropped exceedingly low. I am in Hiroshima at the moment and follow the news closely.
