25 Tokyo Monorail employees caught fare-dodging

TOKYO —

Twenty-five employees of JR East Tokyo Monorail have been disciplined and eight dismissed after it was revealed that they had regularly been using on JR train services without buying tickets.

According to JR East, the offenders include a section chief and other employees in management roles. As part of their punishment, some of the offenders will have their pay cut by 30% for three months.

JR East reported Friday that one of the methods employed for dodging ticket fares was for an employee to use his Suica charge card to enter the station nearest his home, then disembark at a station near his place of employment at which point he would enter the staff area and use the computer system to delete a portion of his journey from the record.

JR claims the cost of the unpaid fares amounts to over 1.2 million yen. One employee allegedly dodged paying 590,000 yen worth of fares over a 19-month period.
