3 family members killed in Tokyo car crash

Three members of a family were killed when their car crashed into a median on an expressway in Fuchu, Tokyo, on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 4 p.m. TBS reported that the car slammed into a median separating an exit from the Chuo Expressway near the Inagi interchange.

The driver of the vehicle, 55 year-old Osamu Saigusa, his father Masaru, 88, and his mother Kimiko, 88, were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Police said no brake marks were visible on the road and an investigation into the cause of the accident is still underway.

The driver may have suffered a stroke, took his eyes off the road, fallen asleep (I know it happened in the afternoon), gotten distracted, etc. Any number of other things could be involved in this. RIP to the victims.

WilliB: Tell us why that's the "top contender" for a 55 year old driving his 88 year old parents, Willi, as opposed to falling asleep at the wheel or having some sudden illness? There's ZERO basis for your statement.

55 is not very old, and the age of the passengers is not relevant to the cause of the accident. Anyway, we are all speculating here.

From the video I watched on the news, the investigators were inspecting the car while it was still resting on its side on the exit ramp. It appeared that he was trying to make or avoid the exit at the last second, and ended up hitting those water barrier cans between the highway and the exit.
