This article should be in the dictionary as part of the definition for "SELFISH". I can think of nothing more selfish (other than having an abortion, whihc is really more criminal) than to have all the sex you want wth whomever yo want, then, when a baby is on the way, merely drop off the baby at the hatch because a child would inconvenience you. Sad, pathetic, tragic, and horribly irresponsible, to say the least.....and it will only get worse as the day pass...
But then again, maybe it's a good thing that these irresponsible wretches have left their children here. At least these children do have the chance ot be adopted by a loving Mom and Dad who will teach them (hopefully) to be better than the ones who left them there in teh first place....
for whatever reason these parents did decide to abandon their babies, at least these little ones will get a 2nd chance at life with some better/loving parents (hopefully). the baby hatch really is a life-saver.
Wow! My wife and I would love to Adopt one! They need to set something up so families who are willing and qualified to care for a child can adopt. But sadly, the J-Gov would rather they rot in a Gov ophanage that let a bi racial couple have one.
What are the rules for adoption in Japan. I have a friend who has adopted two children from this place I believe, and he and his wife are white Americans. I see that VoXman has commented on the near impossibility for his situation. Also, is there a stigma in Japan in adopting completely out of the family line. I know it has been done in the past in regards to an Uncle/Aunt raising a child as their own, because it was part of their "blood line" but is there a stigmatism about a completly non-related adoption.
Blue Tiger is correct in regards to this being a selfish act. If someone has a moral prohibition on abortion, then I don't see how carrying a child for 9 months and then just giving it away with no way for the child to ever find their way back is any better.
I wish all the best of luck to these little ones, and must say that the J-gov has at least tried to do something good in this regards.
It is a good idea for a country like Japan with a critical declining population. If more cities will offer similar hatch, it could solve the population problem.
Blue Tiger:
So you think abortion is a crime? I don't think much of your holier than thou attitude. Would you like to repeat your words to women who have been raped and are expecting their rapist's child? What women do with their own bodies is none of your or my business.
I personally think abortion should be a last resort, but I would prefer to see a termination (providing it is still the early stages of preganancy) than to see a child suffer at the hands of parents who have absolutely no interest in parenthood and end up abusing and killing them.
I think saying the aborted fetus was "part of the woman's body" is self-servicing. If you decide to kill someone, you will do it anyway. It's is true, once the pregnant woman makes up her mind that she just can't carry the baby to term for whichever reasons she has, she will go ahead and get rid of it. It's pragmatism. Saying the baby is akin to an "appendage" (my body?) of some sort is ridiculous. What's the use of saying "my own body?" That's nonsense. Ultimately, the pregnant woman will do as she sees fit.
I also wonder if these children left in the baby hatch may be adopted, and under which conditions. How are children protected after the adoption procedures are completed? Where will the children left in the hatch be cared for?
Nobody here knows the story of the woman who carried that baby to term. She may have hid it from unsuspecting parents (yes, it's happened!) and had the baby in her bedroom before dropping it off. She may be a sex slave who wasn't allowed to use contraception and the baby was dropped off by her keepers.
My point is that disgust and abomination isn't a fair response. Neither is "hallelujah--these drop-off centers rock!" The right answer, in my opinion, is what the hell is wrong with our society?!?!?

far from an ideal situation but better here than in a family mart bag in the park bin

"If more cities will offer similar hatch, it could solve the population problem."
Do you really believe that or are you just being sarcastic?
Snyder at 11:21 PM JST - 31st March
While this system is not the "ultimate' solution to the problem, it does have merit in the fact that a life (actually 15 so far) has been saved.

I agree with Azrael.
It is better to be born and given a chance than to die and never have it.

God. Not another abortion debate!
