Three people were injured by a bear in a residential area of Aizumisato, Fukushima Prefecture, on Thursday morning.

According to police, the first attack occurred at 6 a.m. when a 61-year-old newspaper delivery man encountered a bear along his route. NTV reported that a local resident heard the man cry out and alerted police. After an ambulance took the man to hospital, about a dozen neighborhood residents were gathered when the bear suddenly appeared again, this time attacking a 54-year-old woman and her 28-year-old daughter.

Police said all three victims suffered head and leg injuries but their condition is stable.

Members of a local hunting club searched for the one-meter-long bear but had not found it by late Thursday.
