3,989 hospitalized for heatstroke in week to Aug 16

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Tuesday that 3,989 people were taken to hospitals nationwide to be treated for heatstroke in the week from Aug 10 to Aug 16.

The figure was a drop of 7,500 from the previous week when the number of victims surpassed 10,000 for the second week in a row.

Eight deaths were attributed to heatstroke, while 78 people remained in hospital in a serious condition.

Of the total number hospitalized, 2,268 were aged 65 and older.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency also said that 24,567 people were taken to hospital for heatstroke in July, the highest figure for July on record.

Health ministry officials continue to urge people, especially the elderly, to drink plenty of water and use the air conditioner.

Considering fact that elderly think a fan running overnight WILL KILL YOU, I don't think anything our government will say will convince them to turn on AC

Oh, c'mon! This is absolutely ridiculous! The temps were just over 30'. It was much cooler than than preceding fortnight. Yeah, a fair percentage were the aged, but you'd think they would learn how to deal with summers after living through so any of them. I just find very hard to believe that so many people get sick in 'mild' summer conditions.
