4 perish in Iwate house fire

Four people were killed in a house fire in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, on Monday night.
A neighbor reported the fire at about 10 p.m., according to Fuji TV. Firefighters tackled the blaze for around two hours before finally bringing it under control. But the house was completely destroyed.
Police said the house belonged to 73-year-old Hiroshi Ozaki. Police said the bodies are believed to be those of Ozaki, his daughter and a married couple acquainted with Ozaki who were also living at his home.
Police said that an investigation is under way into the cause of the blaze.

Truly tragic. It looks like they might have been sleeping and succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. It's always a good idea to install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors in your house.

Won't disagree on the value of smoke and CO detectors, but in this case there isn't yet any information as to how they died. The bodies were sent to Morioka for identification and autopsy and the investigators haven't yet ruled out foul play.
