Heh, I love hearing stuff like this. Somehow just makes me laugh reading comments about how horrible and evil whaling is. Especially considering it usually comes from Americans or Europeans, the same ones who very nearly made these same whales extinct 80 years or so ago.
Whaling in itself is really not so horrible or evil. The everlasting problem is the difference of opinion between the nations that oppose it because of concerns for the species, and the nations that in the face of that consensus perpetuate it. I don't think there will be much to laugh if the countries held responsible for the almost extinction of the whales 80(?) years ago resume whaling under the same pretext Japan & Norway are doing it now. "Game Over" would appear on the screen very quickly.
I had hoped you would come up with a better argument. If it is meant to discourage humans from 'harvesting' other animals for their consumption we would have a big problem. Or is this only meant for whales?
It must be good if IWC can decide the exact number of whales which can be harvested for human consumption each year in a sustainable management.Whale population is on the way of recovery at the moment but the situation will certainly change if the hungry world (China,India,SE Asian countries,Korea..etc)wants to taste whale meat too...
Unfortunately some whale species that are NOT being hunted are right now close to extinction. Right Whales for one are very close, read the reports on CNN about how red tape snarls the effort trying to protect them.
Biggest danger for them is being hit by ships during their migration and dying slowly after the collision or sustaining very heavy injuries from the shops propellers.
Cleo do you also have empathy with them and the whales that are being killed by submarine sonar, etc.
Or do you only go after whale hunters?
Zen Builder -
I 'go after' (in the nicest possible way of course, me bein' a lady an'all) all those with no empathy for our fellow residents of spaceship Earth. I have a long history here on JT of slamming all those guilty of cruelty to animals and people weaker than themselves, and all those who take pleasure in the suffering of others. That includes whalers, 'game' hunters, teenagers who beat swans to death for the fun of it and jerks who eat foie gras/wear fur.
While we should be able to expect drivers of boats at sea to be as careful as we expect drivers of cars and trains on land to be, accidental collisions do occur, especially in view of the fact that whales don't always sit on the surface where they're clearly visible. Unless the boat deliberately aims at the whale, it's a traffic accident. The problem of submarine sonar is also now widely acknowledged and I understand the navies involved are looking into the matter. Maybe they need to look into it more seriously, but I doubt that any navy people are deliberately using sonar to kill whales just because it's 'fun'.
I come from a looong line of hunters, we only take what we can use/eat or kill old and deceased animals. Yet at the same time we try to reduce the suffering of our kills as much as possible(not always possible).
We are not the type of guys that walk into a forest using semi-automatic rifles we sit in a tree and wait for a killing shot for hours at end.
Said that your posts hurt me and others that respect the prey(meat)that we eat. You are a vegetarian that is fine but we don't subscribe to your views same way as I most likely don't subscribe to your religious views(which I assume are buddhist).
Explosive harpoons, etc been used for 140+yrs for killing whales, nothing new there.
IMO & IME, there is is no easy way to kill a 70+ton animal easily and quickly.
You would know that if you ever hunted an animal.
You would be surprised at the stuff I eat (can't post as a mod will remove it even though a large population of the world eats it too).
Said that there are some things I refuse to eat like shark-fin derived products. Google shark-finning and the impact it has on the worlds oceans.
But I am all for taking an animal that is NOT endangered and can be sustained. Plants also suffer when you pick them.
The seeds, etc you eat are still alive and could be planted to produce new crops, etc.

I don't think any of the Americans or Europeans (or any other nationality) posting on JT are over 100 years old. Maybe you believe in time travel?

Try telling the whales that.

'Twasn't an argument, 'twas an observation.
What big problem would we have if people started showing a bit'o empathy?

Are they going to go through the North West (or perhaps North East) passage?
