Wow, tragic. I assume everyone was wearing life jackets.

Tragic indeed...I wonder how big the boats were? I know life jackets are not required by law in Japan, but if the seas are threatening, I would have one on.

On a seafaring note, it usually depends how you handle a boat as to whether it capsizes or not. In a heavy swell or breaking waves the bow of the boat should be kept square on to the waves, or the waves can turn the boat side-on, which can cause the boat to broach or even capsize.

Wearing a buoyancy aid or life-jacket is obviously the most elementary safety measure but many do not bother, and some of those lose their lives, of course.

Spare a thought for the grieving families.

    Vagante,

You are correct regarding the handling of a boat, but there are times when you are simply at the mercy of Mother Nature and she can be a cruel mistress, especially regarding nautical matters.

    Very sad.

A few years ago my nephew lost his life at just 18. He was with a very experienced crew on a boat, yes and wearing a life jacket. A very bad storm suddenly blew up without warning. All crew lost! My sister will never recover from this tragic accident as I'm sure the families here will not. RIP. My condonancies to their grieving families.
