Yep! What a year for rocking and rolling. Hoping this year is calmer for all.

When does an aftershock stoping being an aftershock and an Earthquake of it's own?

@daisan, thanks for the link. The time starts March 11, 1:00 a.m. The major one is at 14:46 (=2:46 p.m.) It shows some foreshocks, too.

There was another 5 this morning at 5:55 am. My phone was making a racket on the train.

After New Year's Day, I am all edgy again! Just keep telling myself that all these shakes are a good thing because hopefully, it's pressure being released! Not that I know what I am talking about....

I usually really like statistics but not this one. In other words, there have been 26.6 earthquakes per day on average, that is 1 every hour.

"Magnitude" refers to the open-ended Richter Scale not the "Japanese Intensity Scale" (which goes up to a maximum of 7), right?

@Badge213 - darn, someone just told me this today, I wasn't paying attention... it was a Kiwi talking about their quakes and shocks- she may have said it takes about a year for shocks to not be shocks but to be proper quakes- but that seems a bit random...

Yes. Shindo has 10 levels, from 0 to 7.

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5weak, 5strong, 6weak, 6strong, and 7.

Kurihara-shi, Miyagi was the only city to report the maximum value of shindo 7, on March 11. The city was not damaged by tsunami. There are no casualties, 6 severe injury, 544 minor injury (population of 75,916 people).

The aftershocks are normal and the number is high due to the size of the March quake as the fault line steadies itself after rupturing. Still, after all that happened on that day it really made people aware of how much damage and how scary a big quake can be after experiencing it firsthand. All the aftershocks really made people edgy.

I know I remain "edgy" when things still keep launching themselves into space during a shaker...

Few Earthquakes in Russia, most powerful was 9.5 in Sakha, people was evacuated for all night, no buildings were crashed. They were not built for regions with earthquakes, but they standed.

I was at an evacuation center terrified with all those constant aftershocks. An only lady next to me said, "After a big earthquake like this, we're gonna have to have about 100 aftershocks. After that, things will be calm." She was quite wrong. Sometime in the future when we have this mega earthquake again, I'm gonna have to tell people, "After a big earthquake like this, we're gonna have to have more than 6,000 aftershocks. After that, things still will be unstable..."

Yes we know that ..

The people of the beginning new clearly that the earth is shaking and the reason for that. but now, most of us do not know the reason...because we believe the science and the technology too far, to come out with reports, tested in the laboratorys.,

They were not all felt. They were detected by machines.

Of those that were felt, most had people wondering if someone bumped their desk or if there was a sudden gust of wind against their building.

Yes, I've been feeling the ground moving every day & night since Jan. 1st. Am I a dog? I've become very sensitive....even today I asked my wife while we were sitting under the kotasu table if she felt movement. Actually, the ground is always moving but as most said, we don't normally feel it. I know the bumps of the street if the cars or trucks pass by or the wind (since I live in a old house)...but it is/was the ground beneath moving. I did manage to capture the March 11th on video cam here as it happened. And on a few other occasions as well. Had my camera on the kotatsu on Jan. 1st but was charging my battery. Still had time to go into the kitchen and run upstairs and film the monitors swaying back and forth...
