I often wonder about these.... strange headline, the places, victims and reporting. If you just glance at it, its all places and numbers.

they never say much about the cause

The cause is almost always either smoking in bed (after drinking), or gas-stoves gone wild.

I was watching something just the other day, when an advertisement for checking your fire detectors came on. FYI, it was not a Japanese broadcast, obviously! Why is it, for all the gas/electric/kerosine heaters that are on constantly this time of year, there is very little public information about disaster prevention displayed in the mainstream media. If you tottle of to your local ward office/city hall you can get some info. on it, but you have to go out of your way to get hold of it. Shouldn't some sort of government agency be placing little reminders into the publics head about these and other issues. e.g. a drink driving campaign at the turn of the year. Is it not too much to ask, or should we get used to reading incidents like these every few weeks. Pull your socks up ojisans and get some work done.

Well, the neighbourhood associations walk around with wooden clappers at this time of year calling out "Hi no yooooouuujin", so they could be said to be doing something, but I think you're right that more specific info is needed.
