7-year-old boy loses forefinger in Shizuoka park accident

SHIZUOKA —

Police said Thursday that a 7-year-old boy lost the forefinger of his right hand on April 2 after an accident while he was playing on a gondola in a park in Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

According to authorities, the boy was playing on the gondola, which consists of a wire cable and a pulley, with his 8-year-old sister around 3:40 p.m. His right hand got stuck between the cable and the pulley and his forefinger was severed.

The city said there is a notice near the ride, warning children not to touch the cable, and that maintenance workers check it six times a year.

I hope they don't take the ride down because of one stupid kid. There is far too much child protection going on in the world. If kids don't learn that pain hurts, they will take that idea into their adulthood and be in big trouble later. I'd rather my kid lose a finger and learn a lifelong lesson over being afraid to go outside and live on his/her own after becoming an adult due to all the coddling we did while he/she was young.

gondola?!? I believe the North American term is 'zipline', the British term is 'aerial runway' and the Australasian word and my favorite is 'flying fox' Gondola is something very different.

p.s. where are all the usual JT suspects berating the parents for poor parenting and lack of supervision?

Apparently this same 'contraption' had similar incidents in 2005.
