8 hurt in explosion at izakaya in Kobe Chinatown

KOBE —

Eight people were injured in an explosion in an izakaya near Chinatown in Kobe on Tuesday night, police said Wednesday.

Police said the blast occurred just after 10 p.m. at the izakaya near Hankyu Sannomiya station, which is not too far from Chinatown. It took staff about 10 minutes to extinguish the fire, NTV reported. Four employees, two customers and two passersby outside were injured, police said.

Police said that the explosion occurred when a bar employee opened several gas cylinders to throw them away. One of them ignited, the employee was quoted as saying, NTV reported.

Hankyu Sannomiya station is not in Chinatown nor anywhere near to it. It would take at least 20 minutes to walk from there to Chinatown.

    How did it ignite?

You pull the rope and you throw the firecrackers out of the windows while you shout something like "xin nian kuai le" !!!! And that's magic : the dragon year spits back 15 meter high flames. Waaaa ! The kids applaud. Then you realize your yakiniku neighbor was degassing his cans just under your window... ooops !

It would take at least 20 minutes to walk from there to Chinatown.

For a tortoise. Officially 1 kilometre from the station gates to the gate of the kitsch street.

a bar employee opened several gas cylinders to throw them away...

...at 10 p.m, when you have customers in the bar, you sort your gomi, of course.

I'm assuming these tanks were filled with propane? I'm surprised Japan allows venting them directly into the atmosphere. Japan seems so recycle-conscious you'd think they would make you exchange them rather than vent and discard.
