89-yr-old woman dies in fire believed to have been started by altar candle

Police in Shibata, Niigata Prefecture, said Wednesday that an 89-year-old woman died in a fire in the livingroom of her house, which they believe may have been started by an altar candle.

According to police and firefighters, the body of Yuri Sekiguchi was found collapsed in her livingroom by her second eldest daughter who had come to visit her at around 10 a.m. Tuesday. TBS reported that the Western-style livingroom was entirely scorched. Firefighters believe that the fire started when a candle sitting on a Buddhist altar somehow ignited other items, including Sekiguchi's clothes.

Sekiguchi had burns all over her body and was confirmed dead at the scene, police said.
