9-year-old boy seriously injured after falling from roof in Osaka

OSAKA —

A 9-year-old boy was unconscious in hospital on Thursday after he fell from the roof of a public arts center in Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture. An ambulance rushed to the arts center at around 2 p.m. after receiving a call saying there was a boy on lying on the ground and bleeding from his mouth. The boy sustained serious injuries to his back and face.

Police said the boy lived nearby and was playing chase with two friends on the roof when he fell over the edge and plunged 15 meters. The door which opens out onto the roof was locked at the time, and police believe the boy jumped over a fence to get where he was. One of the boy’s friends said: “He was running around the edges when he fell.”

Obviously a very secure fence this kid jumped over to get on the roof. I guess kids will be kids.

Kids will be kids, which is why they need adults to watch them. Unless you prefer we be like animals and just kind of let them go as soon as they can walk and eat on their own. When I was 9 my mom had a rule "Stay where I can see you". I think it was a pretty good rule as I have never broken a bone.

I've climbed many emergency ladders, roof tops, chimneys, walls, trees, and cliffs in my teens, but never run around the edges. Holding or clinging on to something in high places is one thing, running on the edge is another thing.

I hope he's alright, too. My son and his friend climbed up on a neighbor's roof when they weren't home and were jumping off into the soft dirt of the field behind it. I heard "THUMP! THUMP!" Then riotous laughter. Then again, "THUMP! THUMP!" I was appalled. It was a high roof and I'm surprised they didn't break their legs. I was like "CUT IT OUT!" That was before they went over to his friend's house to make water balloons to throw at police cars . . . no wonder I'm grey.
