TOKYO —
Actress Mitsuko Mori, who recently gave her 2,000th performance of her signature play ‘‘Horoki,’’ received the People’s Honor Award at the prime minister’s office on Wednesday. Mori, 89, is the 17th person and the first actress to receive the prestigious award inaugurated in 1977, joining the likes of baseball legend Sadaharu Oh and the late singer Hibari Misora. Mori received a certificate, a shield and a watch from Prime Minister Taro Aso.
Mori gave a DVD series of ‘‘Horoki’’ to Aso and later told reporters that she would like to continue performing onstage. ‘‘I wonder if I’m worthy (of receiving such an award). (2011) will mark the 50th anniversary of my first performance (in ‘Horoki’) and I’m determined to continue until then,’’ she said.

A shield! Maybe they'll ask her to join the anti-piracy missions.
