I just watched the news about this. Many students are mature age so they can smoke. And the younger students are smoking anyway, so instead of smoking in their rooms or out in the forest, they were asked to smoke in the appropriate room...

A slow day for news? Underage students in smoking shocker! This is hardly a story as it happens everywhere.

If they just dropped everything they are doing, and I mean EVERYTHING, they just might be able to prevent determined under-age smokers from smoking maybe.

I think they are better off trying to teach these youngsters to do their bad habits responsibly and anybody actually faced with the situation rather than arm-chair quarter-backing is going to agree.

I also watched the news about this "problem." This a school for delinquent children, who have had some problems at other schools, and of course many of them have behavioral problems which includes, duh, smoking. Last year a girl smoking in the forest caused a forest fire, so this time they have special rooms for smoking, where they try to teach them “responsible smoking with the view of quitting.” The ashtrays were found in those special rooms.

Law is law, but should we teach them how to be responsible for smoking or should we just tell them to quit? Or another example, should we tell the kids that should be careful with sex or should we tell them not to do it?

I somehow guess the school may be doing something better, even if it’s not exactly sanctioned by the law.

I'm astonished that school children in Japan smoke.

Statistician. Are you astonished about this dropouts' school, or school children in general?

How can anyone be surprised that Japanese school kids smoke here? Give you one guess as to why they created the TASPO card.

When I worked at a high school a very, very long time ago, one of the kids actually quit as he didn't want to give up smoking. I've actually been on the Tobu-Tojo line out of Ikebukuro and there were a bunch of rough looking kids smoking IN the carriage. No one blinked an eye (a little polite coughing though).
