    Never mind, the supine Supreme Court will soon overturn this ruling, regardless of what the constitution says.

    This judge is not long for this world...

    These activist judges need to be stopped. They cannot make law from the bench. The Diet makes laws. If the judge is so against it, he can go help the people in Iraq himself. Would he rather see them die at the hands of Al Quaida? At least the government is trying to save people from terrorism.

    The more J-people continue to deprive their own nation's right to self defense and to participate on a global scale against terrorism and mutual security concerns with their Allies, they will continue to ive with an high number of US troops on their soil and some of them will commit crimes. These people can't have it both ways.

    I suggest those who comment above immediately read the Preamble of the Constitution of Japan and note especially it begins with "We the People"

    Japan was sucked into Iraq by our President when his so called coalition deserted him and he needed to bolster his reasoning as to what he hoped to accomplish in Iraq.

    JAPAN'S ADVENTURE IN IRAQ WAS DECIDEDLY "UNCONSTITUTIONAL."

    May I also suggest that those who comment for Japan Today go to Goggle and bring up the Constitution of the State of Japan. IT IS AN EYE-OPENER;

    This story is to be filed under the "seems important to most of the public, but in reality means squat" file

    Yet another sign that the J Constitution, particularly Article 9, needs to be amended...

  • GrouchyGaijin at 01:49 PM JST - 18th April

    I was amazed to see Chief Cabinet Secretary Machimura dismiss this out of hand, "This ruling is irrelevant, and will not affect our operations in any way." Can WE do that if we have a court judgment against us? "Gee, thanks Your Honor. Sorry you found me guilty of that heinous crime. Must be off, I have another one to commit. Cheerio!" This wasn't a court ruling, it was a court musing. Same effect!

  • some14some at 03:36 PM JST - 18th April

    GrouchyGaijin, i fully agree with your comments except you were amazed whereas i was shocked at government's response to this verdict.

    What's funny is that they don't recognize Baghdad as a combat zone! How many thousands dead and counting?

    Note to all those Americans who act as Japanese "wanna-be's" Japan has a "Peace Constitution" and the Preamble begins with the same words as our American Constitution - "We the People." I suggest all you wanna-be's read the Japanese Constitution and know that we veterans of WWII won a war so the People of Japan can choose their own destiny.

    This is the 18th of April - a day when the People of American spoke out in 1775 to give fellows like Grouchy Gajin the right too run off at the mouth, "but not in another country."

    This is good and almost unbelievable news--a Japanese court upholding Article 9 of the Constitution.

    Well, what's next? The LDP government will weasel there way around it. The Supreme Court will overrule the High Court. Something this good cannot last in Japan long.
