AstraZeneca to support disaster orphans

AstraZeneca KK will support children who lost one or both parents during the March 11 earthquake and tsunami through a total of 151 million yen contribution to Ashinaga Ikueikai, a non-profit organization based in Japan. The contribution which will be provided over the course of several payments will support mental health services for children and go toward the building of a Tohoku Rainbow House, a shelter for children orphaned by the disaster.

An initial, immediate contribution of 51 million will be donated to Ashinaga for its programs that provide mental health services to affected children in the area. An additional 100 million yen has also been pledged by AstraZeneca toward the construction of the Tohoku Rainbow House.

The Tohoku Rainbow House will be a community gathering space where children affected by the disaster can feel safe, and participate in programs designed to encourage healing and well-being for the future. Ashinaga already operates Rainbow Houses in Kobe and Tokyo. A portion of this contribution was also directly donated by the employees of AstraZeneca KK and then matched by the company.

“We are profoundly grateful for the support from AstraZeneca to providing much needed mental healthcare to children in Tohoku area. The unprecedented magnitude of this natural disaster has left a large number of children without parents and thus in a state of immense grief. The contribution will help us strengthen the care we deliver and provide a physical place for emotional healing to those children,” said Ashinaga Chairman Yoshiomi Tamai.

“By joining forces with Ashinaga, AstraZeneca is aiming to address a special need for the children who lost parents in the Great East Japan disaster. Through the expertise and experience of Ashinaga, these orphans will have an opportunity for a bright, healthy future,” said Dr Masuhiro Kato of AstraZeneca. “Our employees from the affected area took part in selecting Ashinaga as the focus of our contribution; their enthusiasm was based on Ashinaga’s legacy of service to orphans and its strong dedication to mental well being.”

Now if companies in Japan demonstrated empathy, we might see the rebuilding of lives and communities in the affected areas much quicker. Well done AstraZeneca :)
