The Koenji Awa Odori festival is great fun- one of my favourite festivals. Might have to check out some of the others.

The original Awa Odori in Tokushima is a lot of fun as well.
If you sort of wander in to the Kousei Kaikan as a foreigner on the right day, they will let you participate in it and get to parade yourself passed the viewing stands.
Tokushima is extremely hot in August, though.

Actually, anyone--foreigner or not-- can participate by joining in the Niwaka-ren. It is not a special service for foreigners, sorry. You are correct about the temperature in Tokushima, however!
And crikeyitsacrock, please tell us in detail why Awaodori is so much rubbish. What are the standards for determining the quality of a festival? Are the thousands that participate in Awaodori just wasting their time?

The festival itself is great. The dance is rubbish. It's called a personal opinion.

So who dances at the bon-odori? It doesnt have to be specially recognized, you just have to dance!

oh and definitely, sweat!

Another great example of Japanese having fun while in fact exercising. If there was an Awaodori conga line at the airport passport control that would be even better
