Rabies and Pigs
Although extremely rare, I do think there have been cases of bovines (pigs) contracting rabies. Considering that rabies itself is present in the saliva of an infected animal, I would assume that rabies would have to be acquired by the pig via a bite from an infected dog or other host animal (bats, etc). Then again, Japan hasn't had a serious outbreak of animal-borne rabies in about 50 years (please correct me if I am wrong). At the same time, however, there was a Japanese guy who died a couple of years ago after being bitten by a dog in SE Asia before returning to Japan.
boars are as mad as a cut snake, and just go apesh!t at the drop of a hat..
maybe someone messed with some of his tree roots and decided to take it out on the world.
Hunger, not rabies. Then they die of exhaustion.
I have read that in Russia, squirrels have killed a dog last week. This year, animals are getting mad because they don't find enough food in forests. In Middle-Age, in my village in France, on bad years (with too few wooden fruits) boars were more feared than wolves, because they would eat anything, vegetable or meat, dead or living and they'd enter the houses...
Anyway, I know boars can be impressive. I've had an accident with them when they were not even agressive. On that foggy evening, Mum was driving slowly but there was that big shock. She opened the door so we could see 3 boars running away. They were just crossing the road, and probably got a few bruises. Our car was a meter shorter and could not be repared.
HUgharse...exactly. boars are nuknfuts. and strong as too. you see one coming get out the way , or know what your doing. I.e. kill it fast then get clear as it will probably rampage for a few more minutes before it figures out its dead.
medium sized dogs and pitbulls are the best for boars, a big one isnt quick or low enough to the ground. If the dog gets gored or pinned, its usually all over.
The traditional boar hunting dog in Japan is the Kishuu-ken. An ancient breed that has one of the closest bloodlines to the asiatic wolf.
(the talking dog in those Softbank commercials. "Yosougai desu!")
The dead dog I saw wasn't one of those. It looked more like a pointer, basenji mix.
My neighbor has about Kishuus. Very obedient smart doogies. They're also known to stalk silenty rather than the charge while barking techinique of other hunting breeds.
Boars and Dogs
An Aussie Guy just down the street has a dogo argentino/bull dog mix. He and the dog have just arrived in Japan. The dog is a pig dog with lots of scars on his head and even a couple on the chest. The guy reckons the dog can stop a 200kg pig quite easily (allowing a person to slit the pig's throat). Actually, the dog is a real softy at heart
Crushing injuries and stabbing injuries are two different things. If a 200kg pig fell on a dog, the rib cage would probably crack open like a wallnut. On the other hand, the close weave of the seat belt material can stop a pig's tusks, etc. It also has to be remembered that dogs either try and overwhelm the pig (giving the hunter a chance of killing it) or slowing down the pig so other dogs can attach themselves to it.
Actually, we thought about giving our own dog a bit of pig hunting experience, except at 117kg of pure muscle he aint that fast. On the other hand, he is excellent at running down people on motor scooters who try and steal old ladies hand bags from bicycle baskets.

You know, if this boar was fingerprinted and given a boarcard it would be easier to find out where it was from. And keep it under control.

Timor, "bovines" are cows, not pigs.
I just checked and it seems that pigs do, rarely, contract something called pseudorabies.

Boars are not to be messed with. I saw some hunters in the Chiba inaka last autumn hauling a dead boar and dead dog out of the woods.
The boar crushed the dog's ribcage before the hunters could get a shot.
To be fair though, it wasn't a very big dog.
The hunter looked distraught and on the verge of tears.
