Bodies of mother, daughter found in Tokyo apartment
TOKYO —
Police said Wednesday that the bodies of two women were found in an apartment in the Tokyo suburb of Tama on Tuesday.
According to police, the bodies were those of a mother and her daughter, aged 49 and 80, TV Asahi reported. They were discovered at around 2:30 p.m. when a care worker visited their apartment, police said.
Police say the apartment did not appear to have been broken into. A doctor who visited the residence to carry out a medical check on the women on Aug 1 said both women seemed to be in good health at the time, TV Asahi reported.
During the week, it is believed that the daughter fell ill and passed away, after which her mother was unable to feed herself and starved to death. Police said autopsies will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

How sad....this is probably the norm but as far as I'm concerned it is still a sad outcome. I hope they found peace and that the mom went out of this world painlessly. Dying of hunger is an awful way to go, especially in this heat.

They need more retirement homes in Japan. The daughter should not have been stuck with this responsibility on her own.

I'd only change this by saying, they need more affordable retirement homes in Japan. Didn't we read a very similar story just a couple of weeks ago? Very sad.

Horrible consequences.. Part of the indignity of not being ultra-rich.
There will be hundreds of mor horror stories of Boomer's being mistreated, undertreated, ignored etc... as the demand for seniors care will overwhelm any countries resouces.
I would loved to become Soilent Green one day when I choose to go...

Something doesn't make sense. How does some starve to dead in less than a week or a week at most? The doctor saw them Aug 1st, and they were dead on Aug 8th? I doubt that you can starve to death in 7 or 8 days. You can die from dehydration which is a method of voluntary death but still seems too short a time period. Death by dehydration takes about a week to 10 days. It can be shorter for the young and infirm.

What they article does not say is what type of health issues the mother and the daughter have? I know that even if you live in a large cities in Japan, there are so many people that live in complete isolation, and nobody cares if you die. Japan is not an easy place to live if you have problems. They need better support system.
