Years of PRC government rhetoric and public opinion manipulation coming back to bit them.

There is a legitimate historical document published by a prominent Japanese scholar that indicates these islands as lying within the territory of China since the Ming Dynasty however it wasn't until the question of the possible development of petroleum resources in the South China seas surfacing that the government of China and Taiwan suddenly became very interested in pursuing these islands. Therefore China being the second largest consumer of oil after America with a economy growing nine percent for the last two decades would love to cash in on this goldmine. It would be a great jackpot if they reclaim these islands. Hence why not take it to the International Court and resolve it diplomatically .

at least the chinese government is demonstrating some perspective and a more mature sense of decorum regarding international relations in the present tense.

Or, the Chinese government realizes it's hard to look dignified in the eyes of the world when it incites hysterically xenophobic mobs to run amok on the streets of major cities.

" Letter of thanks from Republic of China consul, resident in Nagasaki, to Ishigakijima in 1920. In this letter, the consul of ROC thanked for saving Fujian fishermen, who met with a disaster, then were cast ashore in Senkaku Islands. And he recognized that Senkaku Islands were the territories of Japan."

That's the problem with this Chinese. They are quick to move and harass anything that is Japanese. Did they ever think that there are Chinese in Japan and their products? Most chinese I know don't behave like this and just mind their own business cuz according to them, it is not a daily problem for them. Unless those unruly chinese activist are sponsored by an outside powerful force to create chaos between Japan and China and worst China itself.

In 1920, Taiwan and the nearby islands were occupied by Japan after a war.

Diaoyu Islands has been territory of China since hundreds years ago. China failed to exercise sovereignty since Japan occupied Taiwan in 1895 and invaded China in WWII. After WWII, the USA handed over the Islands administration to Japan while China was in fierce civil war and then struggled in the Cultural Revolution, a severe internal disorder. Japan took advantage of these opportunities to control the Islands while China was in chaos. Japan would be so shameless as to say China didn't claim at that time.

Then China should suggest taking Japan to tjhe ICJ over this issue. Because frankly, nobody on the planet other than the Chinese believe this.

Clearly the CCP government has learned it's lesson from previous anti-Japan demonstrations, which tarnished the image of China by making themselves look, in the eloquent words of another poster, like a bunch of out of control monkeys. The real question is how is the Cjinese government going to deal with this when Japan invariably builds structures, perhaps even posts JDG or JMSF there.. Because the position and actions that China has taken, and actually fuelled by South Korea regarding the Liancourt Rocks to a great extent, is forcing Japan in that direction. How will the frothing at the mouth demonstrators react towards the CCP government who "failed to start a war" with Japan and take the islands?I suppose the CCP government can just roll in the tanks like they've done before.

It is beyond anyone's imagination; masses of people in Japan not going to work to do a similar protest in Tokyo. No need to go to work tomorrow, there is no job there. Nothing happens without government permission in China. C'est la vie.

So you believe the First Sino-Japanese war and the occupations of Taiwan and Manchuria were just figments of the Chinese imagination? Are you trying to convince of of us this, or yourself?

Hence why not take it to the International Court and resolve it diplomatically .

As most people have figured out with regards to Dokdo, you can't go to the ICJ unilaterally, and the controlling side is not going to go along. Talks of the ICJ are nothing but bluster.

The territorial row over the Senkaku (or Diaoyu) Islands looks like a brawl of one nationalist group of one country against another nationalistic group of another country. But the size of people that took to the streets in Chinese cities demonstrates there are far more nationalistic and chauvinistic elements in China that instigate such demonstrations.

Don't simply call those radical elements in both countries activists; they are "uyoku" or right wingers wherever they live, Japan or China. Nationalism and chauvinism must be rooted out before the situation spins out of control.

There should be an international forum at a citizen's level to discuss the problem. Simply shouting at each other, "the islands are our territory," won't solve the problem at all. Both sides must be cool-headed enough to listen to the other's say.

ICJ may be the best venue for territorial discussion but, strangely enough, the court won't take up a case filed by private sectors nor unless two concerned countries jointly filed the case. That's really strange.

The U.N.'s reasons given for these conditions are: (1) that the international community doesn't have a unified law enforcement power and (2) that each member nation has equal sovereignty. Could they be the reasons? The U.N. should re-examine the rationality of such provisions and get rid of them as soon as possible. Or does it think territorial disputes should be solved between relevant countries even if that meant resorting to force?

The Potsdam Agreement clearly states that: "The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine." "We" means the Ally nations.

By their own constitutional laws:

Japan is not allowed make territorial claims from Ally nations or even make disputes with Ally nations. Japan is not allowed to use of force, military or any of their power to punish their formal enemies and other neighboring states. Japan is not allowed to have their own military force but allowed to have only self defense in case other attacks core Japan, this does not includes East Sea, Diaoyu, Dokdo and Kuril areas. Japan is under control from Ally nations - U.S, UK, France, Russia, China and Korea.

Whose property is the earth's satellite moon? Is it the property of someone who discovered it first? But how could you prove that someone discovered it first? Or is it America's because Americans set foot on the moon for the first time in history?

Uninhabited outcroppings far in the ocean have this strange and queer aspect by nature. Can history be the answer? Sometimes yes, but not always. Can ancient China's Great Wall mark the nation's borders with other nations?

Territorial disputes between Japan on one hand and China, South Korea and Russia on the other must be engaged at a formal arena such as the UN or its subsidiary ICJ.
