Well, I too somehow feel that this is a positive development, but its hard to say exactly why.

Would love to be a fly on the wall when the Japanese coast guard handed him over to the Chinese coast guard. Did they radio them in to come and collect him? Did the two boats meet in open waters? They just let him walk over to the other boat? So many questions.

Thanks for Japan coast guard's help. Next time he will be landing better. China coast guard will surely do same thing if Japanese doing that. The conflict was started by Japan's government buying the island, and Abe's trying anything against China.

Even if the balloonist actually made it to the islands, he would still be in legal trouble anyway for arriving on Japanese territory without a valid visa and not filing a flight plan with Japanese authorities (since hot air balloons can cruise over 914 meters in altitude, they're subject to ICAO civil aviation regulations).

In short, this publicity stunt could have landed the balloonist (pun intended!) in jail for quite a while even if he succeeded.

cooks must be nicely paid in China now that they can afford hot air balloons with radios- especially ones that look like the type raced in competitions.

First great work by Japanese Forces, reasonable and polite exchange and return of aggressor.

Second, clearly this was the next attempt by the Chinese officials to nit pick and try to bully their way onto Japanese territory. Clearly they have not been able to accept reality the Islands in question are part of Japan. Period.

Thirdly i see mostly nice and happy posts only a few late comer Chinese Communist supporters hurrying to try to make any kind of negative spin on what was a supreme Japanese victory and a fine example of how a mature modern nation acts in such circumstances: flexible, respectful but firmly clear about its own rights on its own territory. Sorry no illegal entry allowed by any means, land, sea or air.

Curious to know if the Japanese confiscated the balloon. It would be interesting to know if any of the equipment or gps could be military or government supplied? I have my doubts that he could have made this journey unsupported.
