Burning Bush: My thoughts exactly.

To Japan: Let's be the adults here, and just report the facts please. Let China be the childish and immature one, and sooner or later, the world will see them as the "bullies".

@ Tahoochi who said, "...sooner or later the world will see China as the bullies."

Sooner or later? China is threatening Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines, and quite a few others. On top of that, they support North Korea. Anyone and everyone can clearly see that China is not only a bully, but the embodiment of megalomania (with an itchy trigger finger). If they want something (Tibet being an example), they will take it without caring about the lives of their victims nor the reactions of the rest of the world.

Arrogant antagonists those Chinese officials are.

What are Self Defense aircraft doing flying so far from the homeland?

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

I hope they flipped them the bird as they did so.

Burning BushJun. 12, 2014 - 06:54AM JST Who approached whom? No doubt from the Chinese perspective, it was the Japanese plane that flew close to the Japanese once. Obviously both parties are aware of each other's flight paths from their radar systems, the fact that neither took >evasive maneuvers beforehand is telling.

The Chinese approached the Japanese planes. Unless you think that SU-27 fighters can be approached by propeller driven recon aircraft. China is pulling the same shirt they did with us in 2001.

SerranoJun. 12, 2014 - 07:28AM JST What are Self Defense aircraft doing flying so far from the homeland?

They were on routine patrol within their ADIZ .

Typical cold war tactics.

Communist China has used this tactic to see if they can get the other side to make a mistake. If a mistake happens Communist China blames the other party.

Nothing new for Communist China.

Mad flying skills!

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Good way to die a martyr..

Serrano they are protecting Japanese territory, what are china doing there should be the question?

And the answer would be - China are being antagonistic. provoking trouble, looking for a fight, bullying its neighbours, trying to stand over Japan and looking to start a war.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

This is how Chinese are. They make you start something then comes back at you.....oh well don't have to think twice of what they are and Im really suprised that they would eve ndo something so crazy that everybody would notice...face reality China no one is gonna go your side now of Did "Never".

7 ( +8 / -1 )

This is how Chinese are. They make you start something then comes back at you

Exactly and well said. Chinese want you (Japan) to make a mistake. Do not get sucked in.

Instead, Japan needs to spend time and effort to let the world to know bluntly what's going on in Asia dealing with bad guy China. Keep it mind they are not invited to the G7. Use it!!

Here we go again: Japanese government plays “the innocent victim” as usual, but there is a small issue though, few countries in the world buy what Japan sells. (guess what Japan did the samething before with Chinese aircraft based on the data)

That being said, it may take some time for Japan to get used to Chinese controversial ADIZ in East China Sea. It’s understandable that it is not easy for Japan to adjust the mindset from a scrambler to be a scramblee. However, there are not many feasible options left on the table for Japan to choose from. To start dogy-fight in the air with Chinese pilots would not be Japan’s best interest, and demand China to rescind its ADIZ has become the water under the bridge already. So learning to be coexistence in the overlapping zone might be decent alternative, especially when the US is preoccupied with the developing Ukrainian crisis.

Maybe, stay coolheaded and stay self-restrained would be a good strategy for Japan now in terms of a better and safer apprroch.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

China is the provocateur, that is all.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

China the aggressor.

Nothing to see, move on.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

show to ( chinese))))) we will show the power of air fighter power > do not push too much, japan need to strike back for real and w show them> we are not playinga here((( vat and ouse game)).======= go blast of the chinese jet haaaaaaaaaaaaaa go japan sdf

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Japan needs to change its Constitution to allow it to forcefully respond to the menace of China. The Chinese need to learn how to be good neighbors in all their borders. On the other hand, you can lead a bull to water but you can't teach it to drink, so force is the only response the shinajin understand.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Sigh... it's not like both fighters' don't have thing called radar... and don't rely just on visual.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

@zteano

Well they are Chinese Fighters... so may be the radar broke up after a couple of time of use....

1 ( +4 / -3 )

As long as the world allows them to behave this way, they will continue and no matter what everyone else say or think. Action speaks louder than word.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

the Chinese defense ministry said on May 29 that two Japanese fighter planes came within 10 meters of a Chinese transport aircraft over the East China Sea in late November last year.

Lol, China and its revisionist history again. If it had really happened you can bet your house and car that China would have shouted loud about this at the time.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Possible scenario, Chinese fighter blows Japanese plane out of the sky. Japanese planes retreat back to base. J govt. lodges a protest. China says j plane attacked first. Back to square one. Abe and friends have a discussion. Ask UN to condem the Chinese action. UN sits on it's hands as usual. Worst case. Japanese planes fire back. Chinese planes go down. More Chinese planes enter the skirmish and then.....

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Dangerous game your playing China, you might not like the results. You would be surprised at how hard Japan really can bite back.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Jack Stern

Your scenario is scary. Hopefully it will not become the reality!

US and Canada, Australia and New Zealand likes the close neighbors of China and Japan. US ADIZ has been overlapped with Canada because of greedy expansion from US. Although Canada is not happy, it has not made the fuss about it. Besides that Canada has not many enemy unlike US. In somecases, Canadian Plane might intrude into US ADIZ. In my living memory, US has never shot down the Canadian plane. Japan should follow the neighborly good will and friendly gesture of US for not making the noise about it. Everybody needs good neighbor like US, Canada, Australia and Kiwi.

In my humble eyes, Japan ADIZ is so large and overlapping with both Korea and PRC. Japan is smaller than Montana state of US. However Japan ADIZ is five times larger than Montana. It does not make sense. Both Japan and China have to withdrew their ADIZ for the sake of all birds and planes freedom for navigation.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Jack Stern

If PLAA actually shoots down a Japanese plane whether it be military or civilian, war will break loose with JASDF fighters shooting at PLAA planes once they enter Japan ADIZ.

It's not the worst case, it is the only possible reaction Japan has to maintain national security.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Things changed, the day that China was afraid Japan gone by now.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Both sides continue to play with fire & gasoline, it's just sad that most commenters can only point fault with the other side. I guess it's called blind nationalism, nationalism sucks, I'm not proud of any government, only individuals within countries are worth taking pride in. Daniel Neagari: I'd bet that more than half of your home electronics are made in China and even your teddy bear. If you hate China soo much, maybe it's time you boycott their products.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Three issues are most concerning here; 1) the lack of discipline of PLAAF/PLAN personnel – as has been demonstrated on numerous occasions, both in the air and on the water, Chinese pilots and ship Captains frequently practice unsafe and dangerous maneuvers, which could easily lead to an accident, and further escalate into a violent confrontation. 2) Fundamentally, one has to wonder how much control that the Chinese civilian leadership exercises over the military. China’s military owns a significant part of their defense industry. In turn, Chinese Generals are unlikely to follow guidance from Beijing, if it’s opposite their own self-interests. With corruption rampant, besides defense industries, Chinese Generals also own stakes in other areas, such as mineral and natural resource companies – would a Chinese General obey a command from Beijing to “dial-back” if it might jeopardize his own sizable financial holdings? Lastly, 3) The virulent nationalism fostered by the Communist government post the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident – with the constant theme that China has been a victim and suffered “humiliation” by foreigners, the Chinese public would quickly demand a military response to any significant incident involving Japanese or US military assets – and likely turn on the communist government if it failed to follow through. The whole situation really is just a “fuse waiting to burn down.”

Just FYI - the US and Canada jointly share airspace defense responsibilities for the Northern hemisphere under NORAD - they secure the airspace together under one joint ADIZ.

It begs the question what type the Japanese planes were. If they were not fighter jets then it's clear that they couldn't have 'approached' the Chinese fighter jets. In any case, China is obviously itching for a serious conflict. But Japan keeps a relatively cool head and is not impressed by their intimidation attempts.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Maybe, stay coolheaded and stay self-restrained would be a good strategy for Japan now in terms of a better and safer apprroch.

Sorry, but you don't have a clue. The communists bullying tactics are plain for all the world to see.

Earlier this week they complained that a simple volleyball match between some Vietnamese and Philippine people was a "gross provocation". Now they pull a stunt like this?

I think its obvious that the commies have no understanding of how to behave with regard to their neighbors. In addition they are guilty of adopting the most pathetic double standards concerning their own conduct.

The only folks who could possibly defend the PRC at this point are paid stooges and lapdogs.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Perhaps the pilot was trying to create an "incident," to facilitate military action. It would not be the first time.

I am scared. I don't want my children to die. Japanese air-force planes may be a lot better but the Chinese have 2800 to Japan's 750.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China has morr planes buy JASDF planes are 4 times more expebsive. Plus. China lacks fire and forget last gen missiles.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For people who are not aware: Japanese SDF's jef fighters pull the same kind of provactive stunts to Russian and Chinese air craft all of the time.

Btw, Data collected by American surveillance means can prove that Japan is not whom it claims as a pure victim.

Anyone and everyone can clearly see that China is not only a bully, but the embodiment of megalomania (with an itchy trigger finger).

I understand, but my point was that Japan should continue to be cautious in not lowering themselves to China's level. And now that I've read Ossan's post, I realize that the possiblity of Japanese SDF planes approaching Chinese fighter jets can be ruled out.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Serrano: That doesn't change the fact that the JASDF were carrying out a routine flight within their ADIZ as they always have done. China is well aware of how Japan patrols, so this incident should never have happened. The only explanation is that the Chinese fighters deliberately flew close to the JASDF aircraft for the purpose of intimidation and provocation.

This is the typical behaviour we have come to expect from China; aggressive and provocative manoeuvres against Japan in the hopes of starting a conflict. China is hoping that Japan will fire first so that they can play the victim, crying to the world about how Japan "has returned to its imperialist ways". You'd have to ride the short bus to believe that guff.

@Jack Stern: Your scenario is not very believable. If China shoots down a JASDF plane, the JASDF won't retreat immediately. They will either retaliate immediately, or more likely they will call in the attack and receive approval to use force. The Chinese jets will be shot down, and then the JASDF will pull back. China and Japan will butt heads on the issue, but shots have been fired so war will break out. China will move against Japan, and North Korea will back them up. Japan will defend itself, and the Phillipines, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea (maybe), Australia and America will all band together against China and North Korea. The odds were never in favour of China, and with so many siding with Japan, those odds shrink exponentially. China and North Korea will be utterly defeated and the two countries will change dramatically. Naturally, South Korea would absorb North Korea, forming one united country again. China would likely break down into several states as Tibet finally earns freedom, and other stolen territories are returned to their rightful owners as well. Disputed islands will no longer be disputed, and what remains of China will probably divide into two or three independent states, without an Oligarchy in charge. Naturally, they'll have to sign numerous treaties, similar to the ones Japan and Germany signed after WWII, treaties that will limit the size of their military, and there would likely be a pacifist constitution imposed as well.

Communist Chinese Government and Military will blame Japan if one of their fight got mechanical experience and crashing into sea. Chinese made Russian model fighters do not have good reputation in quality. It's very dangerous if their fighters crashed themselves near Japanese territory.

Communist Chinese Government should know intimidate to Japan will encourage Japanese Government to build up its military might. If Communist Chinese does not want Japanese Government raising spending on military hardware and building up its military strength and then stop bullying Japan.
