Come on people, you got on a gravy train that was only going to prop you up for so long. Though I don't agree with everything he writes, Alex Kerr hit the nail on the head with villagers getting addicted to the construction industry, only to end up with gigantic, underused concrete behemoths that ruin any good scenery or local sights that existed. People from the city are less and less enthusiastic about going all the way to the countryside to see...More cement!

hydro-electricity, water supply for 4 prefectures, and flood control IF the dam is built.

excess highways, bridges, tunnels, at two levels of altitude that will need to be maintained, whilst getting less and less usage if the dam is not built.

Who's going to go in and buy or build in the area now? No one in their right mind. The whole economy of the area will remain in limbo while the project remains half complete.

NOT finishing this particular project is the biggest waste of our taxes.

the LDP mouthpiece Yomiuri has been running false stories for weeks about how "upset" the villagers are. And shame on those from Naganohara who have sold themselves and the village out for decades. This gives me hope that the DPJ might be a fresh change after all.

All I can say is, FINISH THE DAMN DAM!

Heh, couldn't resist. Seriously. Taj is right in what he said. They should finish the project.

I say make the place a tourist spot and into a dinosaur LDP waste of tax paper money for a pork barrel job. Local construction workers can get into a new safer business and everyone would be happy to be toured there. I want to go see this waste of money project.

Halting the project after so much money has been spent and people relocated is just as dumb as starting it in the first place. Taj: right on the money and not a positive sign of new leadership.

Wonder how many partly completed projects will be left throughout Japan. I can see a number of such in Okinawa like the bypass of Kin which was stopped 10 years ago leaving a perfectly completed bridge complete with signs in the middle of no where.
