6 Comments

A married couple was killed after a minicar and a station wagon collided head-on in Wakuya, Miyagi Prefecture, police said Friday.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 9:40 p.m. Thursday night on a straight stretch of a two-lane road in a rural area. TBS reported that the 32-year-old driver of the minicar, Takahito Yusa, from Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, and his 31-year-old wife Kozue were taken to hospital with severe injuries and pronounced dead on arrival. The 22-year-old male driver of the station wagon broke his leg.

Police said an initial investigation showed that the station wagon veered into the opposite lane and they are questioning the driver further.

Sad to hear. Minicars not a good idea, really. Like fighting with one hand tied behind your back.

Kei = coffin on wheels.

Well then, if Kei cars are dangerous why not ban them and while you're at it motorcycles and bicycles. Make everyone drive HUGE SUVs and ban all huge transport trucks, big buses and that should level the playing field, yes? How about we first figure out what caused this crash, learn from it and make changes if necessary. Maybe it was a mechanically failure or maybe the 22 year old driver was farting around with his keitai or maybe a bee flew into his car and stung him causing him to swerve. The Kei car didn't kill the couple any more than did fuel in the tank or colour of the paint on their car.

Head on is mostly fatal, in that the bigger, heavier car usually survives, as it moves a bit further ahead after collision as if hitting into some kind of a cushion, whereas at impact, the hitting speed of the occupants against the dashboard in the lighter car actually increases because of the rearward movement of the car. Besides the flimsy body structure of the Kei also counts, of course. RIP the sweet couple.

Agreed with above comment. My wife and I only have 1 bicycle, one kei, and one motorcycle. We can't afford a white plate. I used to have one and we just could not afford it anymore. It would sure would be nice to afford the more expensive car payments, insurance, car tax, and shaken. With the motorcycle i understand and except the increased danger, with the kei we simply can't afford to upgrade.

If people would drive like the rules state, we all could drive around with cardboard box cars and still not have problems. Just yesterday, LONG after a traffic signal turned red, a huge bus driver decided to run the light. Any car that would have been been in that spot would have been crushed. So, keep the Kei's and ditch idiot drivers. Bus and truck drivers for sure!
